LEAP Skills

***LEAP stands for Learning Experiences: An Alternative Program. It teaches children social skills to work on getting a peers attention, sharing toys, share a request, play organizer, get a compliment. We will be working on these throughout the whole year.

Skill 1: Getting Your Friend’s Attention

We practiced working on getting our friend’s or teacher’s attention. It is very important that children learn to play with each other. One way to get a peer to play with you is by getting their attention. This also helps when asking for something.

This is how we have practiced getting someone’s attention.

1.) Look at your friend.

2.) Say your friends name.

3.) Gently touch your friend on the shoulder or arm if she isn’t looking at you.

4.) Keep trying if you didn’t their attention.

After we spoke about these steps and demonstrated them for the children it was time to have them do it. Encourage your child to practice these steps at home.
