Overview

Now that you have an understanding of the meaning of the terms Separation of Powers and Checks and Balances, it is time to put that understanding to work.  You will try to find examples of each for the three branches of government from current news.

Task

Find newspaper or newsmagazine articles that illustrate our system of separation of powers and checks and balances.

Steps

1. Use the links below to access recent editions of news sources.

2. Locate a story that shows either separation of powers or checks and balances in action.

3. Copy the article (or portion of the article, including the headline) to a word document, list the source and answer the following questions:

Is this an example of separation of powers or checks and balances?

Explain how this article relates to either separation of powers or checks and balances.

4. Print out your papers.

Exceeds Expectations- Two articles demonstrating the powers of two differnet branches of government, accurately answering the questions for each.
