Lewis and Clark ABC Book

Objective: Students will gain a greater understanding of the Lewis and Clark expedition through the Louisiana Territory by examining the expedition’s route, roles of individuals involved, contacts with Native Americans, and the knowledge gained during their travels.

Product: Each student will create an ABC book about the information you learn from handouts, web sites, and videos shared in class.

Requirements for your book:

• Your booklet must be written neatly in pen or typed. When deciding on how to prepare the finished pages of your booklet, you should consider your penmanship, the timeline for completion, and availability of a computer.

• Your booklet must have a cover page including the title of your book, the author’s name (that’s you!), and a graphic of some type (an original picture, diagram, pattern, etc.)

• You will need to have pages A-Z, using both sides of the paper so that you end up using 13 pieces of paper.

• Each letter will represent a word related to the expedition. The word might be someone’s name, a group the expedition encountered, animal or plant life they recorded, tools they used, etc. For some letters, it will be necessary to have the letter be part of the word. For example, you might be hard pressed to find an appropriate term for the letter “X,” so you could use “Exploration.”

• Each page must include a minimum of 4 sentences explaining the importance of: the item to the expedition, how it was used, the benefit or problems encountered by the group, etc. You may not write more than 10 sentences on one page.

• You must include original artwork for each letter. You should use colored pencils or crayons so the artwork does not bleed through to the other side. (No markers!)

• You should have a map page showing the expedition’s route to the Pacific and back. There is a list of important points on the journey located in this packet that you must include on your map, also.

• You must include an author page which tells a little about you and includes your picture on the back cover page.

• Your pages must be arranged in the following order and contain the aspects described above:

• Cover page

• Pages A-Z

• Map

• Author page

Friendly Advice: There are a lot of possibilities. If you have a question about whether or not an item relates to the expedition, ask Mrs. Nelson or me before creating the page.
