After the explorers had claimed lands for various countries, those nations were eager to establish colonies. By having people establish settlements on the land, nations could better ensure the land would remain in their possession. Doing so would also enable them to profit from the claims. The English attempted to create colonies in North America twice before they finally succeeded at Jamestown.
