Progressives

OVERVIEW

As a result of the quick growth in population due to the large number of immigrants to the U.S. and the rapid rise of industry, the country faced numerous challenges.  There were a lot of people who could identify what was wrong but a few who did something to fix what they saw as a problem facing the country.  These people were known as Progressives.

TASK

Your job is to learn about one of these progressives and report the information to the rest of the class in a PowerPoint.

STEPS

1. Read about the progressive reformer you have been assigned by clicking the appropriate link below:

Alice Paul

Robert LaFollette

Theodore Roosevelt

W.E.B. DuBois

John Muir

Mother Jones

Upton Sinclair

2. In your notebook, record information to answer the following questions:

  • What did he/she think was wrong in America?
  • What did they do to fix it?  What reforms were achieved?

3. Meet with the other people who were assigned your progressive reformer.  Discuss you answer to the questions and determine what you need to teach to the rest of the class.

4. One of the members will open this PowerPoint Template to record the information the rest of the group tells them to include.

5. When finished, save it to the desktop and then upload it to Student Docushare.  Don’t use your name, instead save it using the name of your reformer and make sure it gets in the correct period folder.
