TOTEMS

Intro

In this activity, you are being asked to demonstrate your understanding of the significance of totems to the culture of the People of the Northwest by creating one representing you and your family. In order to do this, it is necessary to expand on the information we have covered on the People of the Northwest and focus on the meaning of totems. When completed with this activity, you should understand the significance and meaning of totem poles and demonstrate it by defining your own totem pole.

Steps

1. Read about the symbolism of totem poles by accessing this link and then clicking the button titled “Meaning” from the top menu bar on the site. As you read this section, think of the purpose and meaning behind the symbols of a totem pole so you can more accurately define the meaning of the symbols you choose for your personal totem pole. When finished, you will have to hit the “back button” to return to these directions.

2. Access the directions for Creating Your Totem Pole.

3. Click on the link or the picturepicture-13that looks like this picture. The handout will appear in your “Downloads folder” on your desktop. Open this document, save it to the desktop with your last name as the title and then return to these directions.

4. On the Creating Your Totem Pole page, there are a number of links to pages about totem poles. As you access these, you will find information on the meaning of symbols for totem poles.

5. Choose six symbols to include in your totem. You can drag the symbol to the Word document you downloaded.

6. Naturally, it is simple to fill up the required symbols. Your grade will depend on how well you explain the reasons you selected each symbol.

7. When you finish your document, save it to the desktop with your last name as the title and then upload it to the appropriate period folder in Student Docushare. To “upload,” choose “Add a Document,” then find your work on the desktop and click the “enter” key or the “Apply” button at the bottom of the Docushare page.
