The Five Themes of Geography!

Objective

Geographers use five basic themes of geography to study the earth and the different kinds of things on it. It is important the students know and can use these themes in their study of the earth and all it’s places to develop a better understanding and appreciation for the world.

Students will be able to accurately explain the Five Themes of Geography by examining a particular country. They will present this to the class in a PowerPoint format.

1. Students will explain and illustrate the 5 Fundamental Themes of Geography based on the country they have chosen.

2. Students will create a PowerPoint of at least 7 slides to apply their knowledge of the 5 themes of geography.

Steps

1. Sign up for a country. If you have a particular country you would prefer to research, come in after school to begin sign-up, otherwise, sign-up as you enter class.

2. Use your notes and the sites below to research your country and collect examples of each of the themes of geography.

3. Create a PowerPoint of your findings using this template to get started. You must have:

  • a title slide (including the name of your country and a graphic.)
  • a slide containing a map with the location of your country clearly depicted.
  • a slide with a definition of each of the Five Themes of Geography and at least one example (pictures are best) for each from your country.

Turning It In

When you finish with a document you wish to turn in, save it to the desktop with your first and last name as the title and then upload it to the appropriate period folder in Student Docushare. To “upload,” choose “Add a Document,” then find your work on the desktop and click the “enter” key or the “Apply” button at the bottom of the Docushare page.
