A Tale of Two Cultures

Intro

George Horse Capture wrote in his book, An American Indian Perspective, there was the potential for harmony between the Powhatan and the English but this opportunity for cooperation did not occur. He suggests reasons why this may not have happened despite the evidence that both societies contained evidence of being civilized.

Task

Ultimately, your task will be to identify areas where opportunities for cooperation existed and the areas that resulted in conflict. Before that can happen, you and a partner will be required to research either the Powhatan or the English using the sites in the resource section. Your teachers will instruct you which group you are to examine.

Steps

1. Access each of the links associated with the group you have been assigned. You and your partner should view each site together.

2. After reading a website, discuss the information that can be included in each of the categories of your graphic organizer. Each member should record the notes on their own paper. Groups should make sure the manner in which they record the information will enable them to accurately express the meaning of the content to students who have not read the same site. In other words, don’t take too many shortcuts, as the information recorded will be used by you to teach the information to others.

3. Repeat the process for each of the sites provided in the resource section for your culture.

4. You will be regrouped to share your information. Within this group, you will make comparisons between the two cultures and identify areas where there was potential for cooperation or conflict and create a chart to explain your findings.
