Research

Every year there are a couple of research opportunities that I sponsor personally because I think they are worthwhile projects that present significant learning opportunities.  Please use the following links to find opportunities for REAL research in your field of interest.

Astronomy: I am applying for a position with the NASA / IPAC Teacher Archive Research Program.  Participation in this program will train teachers (me) and students (you) to use archived astronomy images to conduct real research.  For those of you who are familiar, it is kind of like Galaxy Zoo on steroids and with the possibility of publication.  We will be using archived data from the Spitzer Space Telescope and other archived telescope data.  This project is, of course, not guaranteed as we have to apply and does not start until Jan 2014.  In the meantime, you could prepare yourself by learning to conduct authentic astronomy research.

Ecology

  • I am participating in the Salt Creek Tiger Beetle conservation project and welcome mature, responsible students to join me.  As this is a Federal level project in coordination with Nebraska Game & Parks and the Lincoln Childrens Zoo, I have to ask that only Juniors & Seniors participate. This is real science, with real data and real consequences for an endangered species from our own neighborhood. You can download the Tiger Beetle Recovery Plan here.

Applied Chemistry

  • Did you know that the single biggest thing holding back alternative energy is our ability (or LACK of ability) to store the energy we generate?!  In a nutshell, we need better batteries.  Industry knows it, government knows it and both are pouring billions of dollars into it but a solution is not in sight.  Did you also know that you can make your own batteries at home.  For the student who WANTS to be in the lab EVERY WEEK creating batteries from household materials and testing their properties.  For the student who is not afraid of learning electrochemistry (most chem classes don’t even cover it).  For the student who understands the importance of safe laboratory practices. NOT for the student who wants to throw things together at the last minute.
