Unit 1 – Acids & Bases

Day 1 (Tues)  – Retake the chem concepts pretest, introduce acids & bases

Day 2 (Wed) – Khan Videos in class: “Intro to pH pOH and pKw“, “Acid Base Introduction” Dissociation of water.  Homework:

Day 3 (Fri) – HF Acid Safety, Strong vs. Concentrated, pH, finding H+ concentration.  Practice worksheet. If you get stuck, here are the Practice Answers. Table of Ka values.

Day 4 (Wed) – Practice Quiz.  We also started a lab: Properties of Acids & Bases

Day 5 (Fri) – Summative Quiz.  Finish the lab from last class.   Homework:

  • Read Chapter 19 Part 2: Acid-Base Reactions & Titrations.
  • Watch Khan videos: “Conjugate Acids & Bases” and “Strong Acid Titration“.
  • Take notes on each video and hand in at start of class.
  • If you missed the quiz.  Please register at Quizstar and take it online.  You have 1 week from the original quiz date and 30 minutes once you start the quiz. Once registered, search for “SFP Chemistry”

Day 6 (Monday) – Lecture & practice: Neutralization reactions and titrations.  Lab activity: Practice Neutralizations.

Day 7 (Wednesday) – Work day.  Titration worksheet.  Catch up with lab notebooks.

Day 8 (Friday) – Demonstration: Indicator solution is made by blending red-cabbage in a little water. Indicator is then mixed with 3 different solutions and color changes are observed.  In water – deep blue.  In acid – red.  In base – green to yellow. Discussion of protonation and de-protonation of indicators. Titration Lab.

Day 9 (Tuesday) – Discussed titration calculations.  M1V1 = M2V2 is a shortcut but should only be used once you know what you are doing. Online Titration Lab. Please print and review the Titration of Antacids lab for Wednesday.

Day 10 (Wednesday) – Lab: Titration of Antacid Tablets.  Lab books will be collected and graded on Friday.

Day 11 (Friday) – Complete titration write-up.  Practice exam for acids & bases.

Day 12 (Tuesday) – Acid & Base Exam.  3×5 card allowed.  Must be finished today.

Day 13 (Wednesday) – Exam corrections.  Grades go in today.

Day 14 (Friday) – Notes on Titration Curves.  Titration Curve Lab.

Day 15 (Tuesday) – Part 2 of titration curves.  We titrated Acetic Acid (vinegar) with 0.1M NaOH.  It takes about 250 mL of NaOH to titrate 25 mL of vinegar!  We will finish the lab on Wednesday.

Day 16 (Wed) – Finish acetic acid titration.  Lab cleanup.  Complete lab write up.  All analysis must be based on YOUR data.
