Day 1 -Hand portfolios, review momentum with online lab.
Day 2 – Momentum Experiment: Egg Drop
Day 3 – Complete Egg Drop experiment. Work on: practice worksheet and Momentum Exam. Momentum exam is assigned as homework.
Day 4 – Video Lecture: Prof Lewin (MIT) on Thermal Expansion. In this video, Lewin discusses both linear and volumetric thermal expansion. Demonstrates expansion of several materials and ends with a discussion on the uniqueness of water.
Day 5 – Lab 1: Temperature of mixing. Homework: Find at least 2 Thermodynamics videos to watch from Khan Academy. Prepare a brief statement summarizing those videos for the rest of the class.
Day 6 (Monday) – Discussed “emergent properties” in reference to thermodynamics. Watched several videos on thermodynamics, bose-einstein condensates and started watching a 1 hour Horizons episode: “What is a degree?” Introduced next project: Thermometer Design & Build. Students will research home-made thermometers at home and go through design / build process.
Day 7 (Wednesday) – Substitute teacher gave a copy of “Thermometer Project” Students have the next 2 classes to create a thermometer from scratch, calibrate it and test it. Students will then create a presentation highlighting the benefits and features of the thermometer they made.
Day 8 (Thursday) – Work on Thermometer project.
Day 9 (Monday) – Finish Thermometer project.
Day 10 (Wednesday) – Thermo worksheets
Day 11 (Thursday) – Present Thermometers
Day 12 (Monday) – Thermo notes & review with sub
Day 13 (Wednesday) – Transfer of heat: conduction, convection, radiation. Start Thermos project.
Day 14 (Thursday) – First trial in thermos project.
Day 15 (Monday Feb 13) – Second trial in thermos project
Day 16 (Wed Feb 15) – 5 minute presentations on thermos design & performance.
Day 17 (Thursday Feb 16) – Discussed energy associated with phase changes (ice –> water –> vapor). Phase Change Lab.
Day 18 (Monday Feb 20) –
Day 19 (Wed Feb 22) –
Day 20 (Thurs Feb 23) –
Day 21 (Monday Feb 27) –
Day 22 (Wed Feb 29) – Introduction to electricity. Simple circuits: light a bulb.
Day 23 (Thurs March 1) -Lab activity: parallel & series circuits packet.
Day 24 (Monday March 5) – Misconceptions about electricity. Discussion: defining voltage & current. Lab activity: Build simple motors.
