Biology/Diff Bio (B-2)

Daily Summary: Click here to find out what we did on a particular day, what the homework was and any news items you may have missed.

Welcome to “Combined Diff / Regular Biology.”  9th grade student are allowed to take Biology but there are some groundrules:

  1. 9th grade students wanting to take Biology must sign up for DIFF Biology.
  2. Students wanting to take DIFF biology in 9th grade must complete the DIFF Biology application form.
  3. 9th grade students signing up for DIFF biology must also sign up for DIFF Geometry and DIFF Geoscience.
  4. 9th grade students signing up for DIFF biology are committing to taking 4 years of science (not a problem for students at SFP)
  5. ALL students taking Biology (DIFF or REGULAR) are required to complete an independent, inquiry based research project related to ecology in the Fall semester.  Start thinking NOW about what your project will be.

Please use the links below to find common / helpful documents related to biology.

  • LPS Objectives for Diff Biology – this is the MINIMUM amount LPS requires you to learn.  This is what you will be tested over.  This is what you should use to guide your studies.  It also tells you helpful things like specifically what pages to read.  If you don’t download the objectives, print them and keep them in your folder (maybe even laminate them) you’ve missed something significant.
  • LPS Safety Contract – Biology is a LAB based science and we want you to learn to do REAL SCIENCE.  But that means you will be in the lab or in the field, working with real samples, chemicals and specimens on a regular basis.  You MUST learn to do this safely as real science comes with real risks.
  • DIFF Biology Portfolio.  Last year I tried a new portfolio where students were asked to write a “For Dummies” book in Chemistry or Physics or whatever class they were taking.  I really liked the results and so will be doing a similar Portfolio this year.  One big change: I will be requiring a “rough draft” for each unit BEFORE THE TEST for that unit.  This means that you will be completing your portfolio “as you go” through the year.  Of course, if you want to improve your grade you can re-write any or all sections when you turn in your final copy.
