PARENTS/STUDENTS: Please complete the following contact information form.  It is an online form and information will become public.  The actual CONTACT LIST is here, but you can only add your info through the form…

Science Olympiad is a competitive team.  We compete in 23 different events, all related to Science.  There are 3 basic types of events:

  1. Paper & Pencil Test Events: learn everything you can about a subject such as Forestry, Ornithology, Ecology, Water Quality and then go take a test.  You will compete with others who have been studying the same topic for up to 4 years so you have to be good!
  2. Lab Events: Chemistry, Physics & Electricity are all events where the test is a PRACTICAL lab activity.  You REALLY have to know what you are doing in the lab.
  3. Performance Events: Build something, bring it in and compete with others who built similar things (robots, rockets, trebuchet and music are all examples of performance events.
  4. Here are the events for 2014 STATE and NATIONAL tournaments.
  5. Click here to access Emily’s spreadsheet and post the events you are interested in.

This year are goals are to finish in the top 3 at state (we have finished 4th, 5th and 4th the last 3 years) and to compete strongly for first at STATE.  Competing at this level takes a significant amount of work and requires consistent practice from the start of the year to the end.

Who is eligible to participate?

  • Science Olympiad is open to all members of the LPS Focus Programs.  In reality, we operate as the “Science Focus Program” Science Olympiad but if students from other Focus Programs are interested, please let me know!
  • Students must maintain a grade of C or better in all classes

When do we practice?

  • Monday after school in Mark’s room (3:15 – 5pm)
  • Saturday: no official practices but students often organize study sessions amongst themselves.
  • One hour per week for each event you sign up for.  If you can’t make this commitment, please do NOT sign up for an event.

What is expected of students? If you wish to be part of the team you must be willing to commit to:

  • at least 1 hour of study PER EVENT that you sign up for on your own time.
  • You are expected to attend weekly practices after school.
  • make progress reports to the rest of the team on a weekly basis.  This means that you should be able to show IMPROVEMENT from week to week.
  • Attendance at practice competitions in December and January in KC, in February in Omaha and at STATE in March.
