Lux Middle School Track & Field

The Lux intramural track and field program is designed to get students familiar with different track and field events, and introduce track and field at a competitive level.  Students who intend to participate in track and field should know the following:

  • Communication is very important.  If you are not going to be able to be at a practice, or a meet, your parents need to get a note or an email to Mr. Burch as soon as possible.  Missing either without a note is an unexcused absence, and may result in you not being able to participate in a meet.  If you are excused from school you are automatically excused from track and don’t need an additional note.  If you are going to miss a Saturday morning meet, I would like to know by at least Tuesday to get things ready.

  • With limited spots available in meets, it may be difficult to get everybody into an event on Saturday mornings.  Please check in with coaches of the events you would like to run on a daily basis in practice.  You need to get a qualifying time every week to be considered for an event on Saturday morning.

  • When participating in intramurals you must follow all school rules.  Bullying, inappropriate language, or disrespectful behavior will not be tolerated.  Students who have a problem with these or other behaviors will be asked not to participate in Lux track and field.

  • Track shoes are not required to participate.  If you have spikes you may wear them, but they are certainly not something that you have to get.  For practice you may wear your regular PE clothes.  You will get a Lux jersey (grey tshirt) to wear at Saturday morning meets.

  • On Thursdays starting on April 11th we are going to try and practice over at Lincoln East.  You will need to either arrange a ride over to Lincoln East after school, or plan on running over with a small group of kids.  Students can change in the locker room and then bring their things with them over to East.  Rides will need to pick you up from East to take you home.

  • While it’s o.k. to try new events out, it’s important that you get a good idea of what you want to do for the meet early in the week.  Let the event coach know that you are interested in that event, and then spend some time in practice working on learning how to do it.  ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS WE HAVE IN TRACK IS WANDERERS .  These are kids who can’t decide what they want to do, or don’t really want to work hard on anything so they cruise from event to event.  Typically they end up distracting the coach and other kids and get into trouble.  When the end of the week rolls around they don’t qualify for any of the events cause they haven’t checked in with the coaches.  DON’T BE A WANDERER!!!!

  • Please let me know if you have any questions.  My email is bburch@lps.org.  Please feel free to shoot me an email any time.  I usually answer them fairly quickly.  If you find out on Wednesday night before a meet that you can’t be at the meet, shoot me an email quickly so I can make any changes that need to be made to be ready for Saturday morning.
