Theme 5: Doers and Dreamers

Students explore the lives of  individuals who have taken life on in unique and powerful ways in this theme.  Through selections from the books A Kind of Grace, Under the Royal Palms, and Chuck Close, Up Close, students work with the skills of identifying propaganda, problem solving, compare and contrast, and the strategy of predict/infer.  The strengthening of higher level thinking skills and nonfiction text reading continues.

Students are responsible for knowing the following vocabulary at the end of this theme:

humble:  marked by modesty in behavior and attitude; not conceited
obstacles:  things that stand in the way of a goal
exhibition:  a show of someone’s work
rehabilitation:  restoration of health or ability
dimension:  aspect element, a range of meaning
abstract:  does not try to realistically represent a person or object
propaganda:  information presented in a way to influence how people think or act
compare:  to show how two things are alike
contrast:  to show how two things are different
