Reading Philosophy

They say reading opens worlds, and I agree completely!  The sixth grade reading year is about developing readers so the world becomes more easily and more enthusiastically accessed through reading.  Each of us as readers has strengths and weaknesses.  Sixth grade is about building on strengths while working to improve those aspects in each reader that may need support.  We will look at fluency (the rate and smoothness of reading), vocabulary building, reading strategies, and reading skills including, importantly,  the high level thinking skills needed to interpret and understand the pieces and books we work through together.  We use the Houghton Mifflin reading anthology/basal series.  In addition, novels are read and discussed to support the integration of the learning and to support higher level thinking.   Spelling lists will reflect the needs of the students.  Listening skills and oral presentations are also a sixth grade emphasis.
