Student Serve Week September 8-13.

Randolph classes completed service to others projects during the week.      Kindergarten students wrote letters to the fire department.

First graders wrote thank yous to workers in our school.

Second graders made “Welcome to Randolph School” cards to give to new students who come to Randolph throughout the school year.

Third graders made posters about our Code of Conduct.

Fourth graders picked up litter around the school grounds.

Fifth graders wrote cards to residents at Tabitha & Madonna, US service men and women, and patients at the Veterans’ Hospital.

Watch the Randolph website for photos and story!

Thank you to the Union College students who came to Randolph on Thursday to do volunteer work as part of Project Impact. They completed many projects for teachers: collating, stapling, cutting, and sorting. The Union College students also tried to paint the new US map on the basketball court, but the rain interrupted their efforts! Thank you, Union College!

The Fun Power Challenge: Love of Play

The goal of this first LPS Wellness Challenge is to encourage students to be physically active in many ways throughout the day, while also having fun playing. Children and families are asked to keep track of the fun play activities they do outside of school. Walking the dog, playing basketball or football in the yard, climbing on monkey bars, or skateboarding are all examples of the Fun Power of Play. Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will bring home their recordkeeping page on Monday, September 15 and return it to school on Monday, September 22. Children in grades K, 1, and 2 will record their play activities from the night before with their class. Questions? Please ask Mr. Atanasu.

Kindergarten children will have their recess at 11:05 before lunch. Kindergarten lunch time stays the same, 11:20-11:50.

From Mr. Atanasu in the Roadrunner Gym:

What is Physical Activity? More Than Just Sports

  • Most people, even teachers, confuse physical activity with sports, but it is not the same thing. Physical activity is a big category that comprises any kind of activity that requires physical movement to do so.  Jogging, walking, running, cycling, tai chi, hide-and-seek, weights, football, tennis, aerobics, all them are different types of physical activity. Our PE classes include learning about and practicing many types of physical activity.

All Grades will take the “Pacer”, running assessment, next week.

  • K-2nd will take it for practice and run the width of the gym, just to get use to “pacing” their run with the beeps that cue for speed.
  • 3rd grade is running for a practice of the true distance for the 1st time.
  • 4th & 5th are running the “Pacer” for record.    To earn a 3 and be in the healthy fitness zone, they must run “21” lengths of the gym or more in the allotted time.

LOVE AND LOGIC MOMENT:

By Jim Fay

Question: What is one of the primary ways that kids learn?

Answer: Modeling (subconscious imitation of adult behaviors, beliefs, and attitudes).

Question: Who becomes a model for kids?

Answer: A person they see as both strong and loving at the same time.

Question: Once a child accepts a person as a model, how does the child     see his/her own position or role?

Answer: As a child, student, and a follower who should listen to the adult.

Question: What happens to the adult’s role if the child can hook him/her into debates or arguments about limits and boundaries?

Answer: Their roles change to that of equals. It is no longer an adult/child relationship. It is now an adult/adult relationship.

Question: If that happens, what happens to the adult’s role as a model?

Answer: It loses effectiveness.

Question: Does the child now feel a strong need to listen to that adult?

Answer: No.

Question: If this is true, then why is it so important that we not engage in arguments with kids about the limits we set?

Answer: If we do, we lose our status as models. Then we find ourselves demanding that sports heroes become the role models for our kids.

Question: Who should be the real role models for kids?

Answer: Parents and teachers.

This is the reason that Love and Logic places such a strong emphasis upon the use of the Neutralizing Arguments technique for those times when kids try to hook you into arguments. Master the art of responding to arguments with, “Could be”, and “What did I say?” Then smile and walk away.

You can pick up some great ideas about putting a stop to arguing and backtalk on my audio CD, Love and Logic Magic When Kids Drain Your Energy. Don’t listen if you hate to giggle. Thanks for reading! Our goal is to help as many families as possible. If this is a benefit, forward it to a friend.
