Randolph School News for October 5, 2012
Randolph School Receives Silver Award
in the Healthier US School Challenge!
This is an initiative to solve the childhood obesity epidemic within a generation. On our award, First Lady Michelle Obama wrote, “Your school is among the very best of the best, going above and beyond…to ensure your students live full and active lives.” Randolph’s Wellness Committee coordinates the school’s efforts at providing lifelong exercise options, healthy lunch and snack opportunities, and events that highlight healthy lifestyles!
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation
proudly acknowledged
Randolph Elementary School
as a valued participant of the Healthy Schools Program, “striving to create a healthier school environment that promotes nutritious eating and physical activity for students and staff.”
SLEEP CHALLENGE!
Did you know elementary age students need 10-11 hours of sleep every night? Keep track of how many hours you and your children sleep the week of October 1-7. The information and recording form went home with students Friday, September 28. Return the completed challenge form on Monday, October 8.
Thirsty?
Skip the Sports/Energy Drinks
Drink Water!
The first sports drink (Gatorade) was created in 1965 by the University of Florida to help their athletes (the Gators) replenish the fluids and electrolytes they lost while practicing in the hot Florida Sun.
Non-athletes don’t need the extra calories and electrolytes found in sports drinks, and those extra calories will be converted to fat.
Energy Drinks are no better then sports drinks, and can be even worse for your health because of the high amounts of caffeine and other stimulants.
Gatorade, 16 oz =100 calories
Powerade, 20 oz = 150 calories
Monster Energy Drink, 16 0z = 200 calories
