While synching Zimbra with your mobile device is great, it’s not always possible or what you want. You might have a device that simply doesn’t sync with Zimbra—like a BlackBerry, or feature phone—or you might be using somebody else’s device to quickly see what’s in your mail or on your calendar. Whatever the reason, Zimbra provides great interfaces for mobile devices.

Simply visit zimbra.lps.org on the device and choose Version: Mobile on the login screen (if Zimbra detects you are on a mobile device, it may do this for you automatically).

    Choose "Mobile" when logging in

Once you have logged in, you will be given an interface that Zimbra thinks most fits your device. If you don’t like the way things look, you can scroll to the bottom of the page and choose a different “View”. The three available are:

We do not have a Windows Phone 7 in-house to try but we have been contacted by the Southpointe AT&T store and they informed us that some LPSers have stopped in and by using our Android setup video, they modified the instructions to work for Win Phone 7 devices like the Surround, Focus and Quantum.

They have created their own instruction sheet for setting up devices to access LPS Zimbra and have distributed that to staff at both the Southpointe store and Gateway kiosk locations.

So, if you feel pretty comfortable with your phone, you might give the android video a watch and then plug the settings into the appropriate place on your own phone OR take your device to your AT&T store and they should be able to get you up and running.

At this time AT&T is the only local carrier that supports Windows Phone 7.

Like Zimbra? Want to move calendars that you have maintained other places into it? Sounds like a great idea!

There was a post created earlier that discusses subscribing to other calendars and that can be useful if you want to keep the calendar where it was but be able to view it, but many of you will want to further and just move the whole calendar over to Zimbra. Not a problem.

The video below demonstrates getting calendar data out of Apple’s iCal and Google Calendar. There are many other calendar products out there and the process—if possible—will be similar.

The benefits of an organization-wide calendar system like Zimbra are the greatest when everyone in the organization uses it. When we can all check the calendar system and see with confidence when colleagues are available, what rooms are open, and what resources can be used, a tool like Zimbra introduces a wealth of efficiencies.

We are aware that some of our LPS colleagues have chosen to use other on-line calendars for a variety of reasons. Reasons include better support for mobile devices, an ability to share data with outside calendar sources and the ability to publish calendar data in a fashion that allows parents to subscribe to it. We insisted on all of this functionality in the review process that culminated in the selection of Zimbra.

Zimbra is a modern and feature-rich system that will do a solid job of meeting the expectations of those that use it. In the interest of maximizing efficiency it will be an expectation that Lincoln Public Schools employee work calendars will be maintained within Zimbra. The publishing capabilities of Zimbra will allow those interested, to aggregate their professional calendar appointments with their personal calendar that might exist on another system such as Google.

Zimbra calendar is chock full of event-related sweetness that will not only delight long-time calendar users, but should also be very attractive to those who have never used an electronic calendar.

Two very useful features are the ability to publish calendars to the public and the opportunity to subscribe to public calendars. Whether you want to make a classroom activities calendar that parents can view or you have a non-LPS calendar that you want to keep close tabs on, Zimbra allows you to create an calendar environment that really represents the many things that you have going on.

Rather than read about it, here are some videos where you can see it in action!

    1. Publishing calendars to the public

    2. Subscribing to public calendars

Because we currently offer two different web-mail environments, Convergence and WebMail Lite, each person really has two online address books. When we put Convergence in place earlier this year we copied all address book data from the older WebMail Lite to Convergence. When we bring Zimbra online we will move address books from Convergence to Zimbra. If you have continued to use WebMail Lite and have added more addresses to that system since Convergence became available, those newer addresses will not be in Zimbra when you login there.

If this describes you, you may want to do one of two things:

    1) If you want to get ready for the switch right now, you could print your address book in WebMail Lite and then use that to add the missing addresses to Convergence. Then when we switch to Zimbra, your updated address book will be moved over and you’ll be all set.

    2) If you would rather do this work later, you could print your WebMail Lite address book now and then after the switch to Zimbra, add the missing folks to your address book there.

Please note that if you use a desktop application like Thunderbird, your address book is likely on your computer rather than in Convergence or WebMail lite. These address books will be untouched and be just as usable after the switch as they are today.
