Classroom News 9-5-16

Happy Labor Day! I hope you are all enjoying your long holiday weekend!

Before long it will be Fall and the leaves will be turning beautiful colors! We will be outside for walking club every morning (unless there is rain) and sometimes these mornings are very cool. Please encourage your child to wear a jacket if there is a cool nip in the air.

Our classroom is pretty cool at times, so please feel free to send your child with an “inside” jacket, sweater, or sweatshirt that they can keep at school. These would be different than their “outside” recess jackets. Be sure to label the inside of the jacket or sweater, just is case!

This week we will be having Parent Teacher Conferences. I am looking forward to visiting with each of you to get to know you better and to discuss your child’s academics and social skills at school. I will be asking you to share a goal that you have for your child this year. It can be a social skills goal (To work on appropriate conversational skills; to work on active listening skills; to work on asking for help when needed; etc.) or an academic goal (To become a more confident reader; to learn the basic math facts; to improve handwriting; to improve spelling; etc.).

Bunny Blog – 1/18

Houdini is still vacationing at home due to the move. He has agreed to let me fill in for him on his blog this week! He hopes to be back soon. He misses his kids, but we need to make sure that the overnight temperature is okay for him at school.

Yay! We are settled into our new classroom! The extra space is wonderful- we’ve gained enough room to add a round table for centers; there is actually more area for movement; and there is space for the students to sit on the carpet (as a whole group).

The table is a great addition to our space!

Everyone can see the front board very easily!

*This week is Unit 4: week 3 in reading. It is a four day week, so please be sure to help your second grader study their spelling words each night. The test will be on Friday.

*Thank you for all of the homework helpers who make sure that math homework is done each night (and turned in each day). The students need to take responsibility for getting their homework done and turned in, especially since they are a semester away from being third graders.  🙂  We are working on graphing in math.

*We’ll be starting our Social Studies unit “We the History Makers” tomorrow.

*The class is very excited that we have started working on cursive handwriting! We are slowly learning the strokes and will be learning lowercase letters first.

**Our specials this week are:

Tuesday- Computer

Wednesday-Music

Thursday-PE

Friday-Art

It is hard to believe that this is our last week of school in 2015! We will be spending these two days reviewing 2nd quarter skills and finishing up a little bit of retesting.

Construction update: I will begin packing up our room over break. Our classroom will be moved on Saturday, January 9th and I will be doing my best to set up our new room on Sunday, January 10th. We will be located in the newly finished north hallway!

Houdini and Blue (our Beta) will not be joining us back at school until after we’ve moved into our new space.

This week:

Monday- Music

Tuesday-PE   Ugly Christmas sweater or NP blues day!

***Tuesday 2:30 Holiday Sing-a-long

***The class has been hard at work earning Dojo points. Many students have already cashed in their points! Some kids have chosen to use their points to spend individual time with Houdini.

Please watch for our class Gingerbread Man to come home to your house for a visit! Here are the expectations:

  1. Read the book The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School. (You can read the book aloud to your child, you can read it together, or you can relax as your second grader reads to you!)
  2. Include the Gingerbread Man in your evening activities.
  3. Have your child write and draw about what the Gingerbread Man does with you.
  4. Return the bag with all supplies (book, journal, Gingerbread Man, box of crayons, mechanical pencil)

Please keep the Gingerbread safe and out of reach of pets and/or little brothers and sisters while he is staying with you. Be sure to keep all of the supplies in the bag, so that all can be returned tomorrow. The next student will be anxiously waiting to take him home tomorrow night!

***Please mark your calendars for the artists’ reception from 10 am – 12 pm on Saturday, December 5th. The second graders prints will be on display at the Lux Center on N. 48th Street. If you have any questions, please contact Miss Alonzo.

manI can’t wait to read the Gingerbread journal!
