October 28

Hello,

I apologize for not having updated in a while, I had to leave town unexpectedly and then was sick all weekend 🙁

We are in our 5th week of Unit 2 in Wonders.  Next week we will be taking the Unit 2 test.  Please help your child study all of the unit 2 vocabulary words and their unit 2 grammar packets as both of these will be tested next week.

For this quarter our class is reading a myth book.  Many of these books aren’t very long, but they are sometimes difficult to follow.  For our project this quarter, we will be giving a book talk.  I am currently having packets made for the students so they know their expectations.  I will try to upload a copy of the requirements onto this website although I have tried that before, and it didn’t work for me.  If it doesn’t upload, I will at least let you know when I give the packets to the students.  As the students finish their books and packets, they can set up a time with me to present to the class.  The last day for presentations will be December 12.

Our class will be starting research this week as well.  We will spend time in the library on Thursday and Friday learning how to find/evaluate resources and choose our topics.  It will take us most of the rest of the quarter to complete this paper.

Thank you so much for your continued support!

October 15-Getting ready for the end of the quarter

Hello!

I hope everyone had a nice break.  I was away from my computer all weekend, but I did catch up on most of my grading for the quarter.  I handed out missing work slips today, and many students turned things in.  I am going to work hard to update it again, so please keep checking Synergy.  At this point, it the missing work might not get put in on the quarter grade, but it will make it in for the semester grade.  There are several new grades that are being added for the end of the quarter, so grades may change daily.

The students have checked out myth books for their next book report.  I have not assigned the project yet, but they will not be due until the week before winter break, so they have some time to get their reading started.

Thank you for your continued support!

October 9

There are a few more grades that need to be added to Synergy for the quarter grade such as the descriptive writing tests, book reports and the last set of Wonders tests we will take tomorrow (Friday).  I will add those in before quarter grades are due next week.  I will be camping this weekend, so while I will be grading the papers, you probably won’t see the actual grades entered inn Synergy until next week.  I am hoping to have most everything in by Thursday.

I hope you all have a wonderful break!!

October 7-getting ready for the end of the quarter

Our class is into Unit 2 Week 2 in Wonders.  We are working on a number of skills, including problem/solution, questions/answers, compare/contrast and greek/latin.  This week we take our tests as usual on Friday, but we will also hand out the vocabulary and spelling for week 3 on Friday as well.  This way the students will have time to study the words over the long weekend.  We will work on the other skills for the week on Wednesday and Thursday next week and test vocabulary and spelling only on Friday.

The book report is due tomorrow!  If you need to review the directions, please look for the earlier post with the directions listed on it.

We will be finishing up our descriptive essays this week as well.  We have been writing them on google docs, which is very convenient.  The students can work on them at home as well as at school 🙂  There will be a 2 day test over descriptive essay either the end of this week or next week.

Synergy is all updated, please look at your child’s grades and make sure all assignments are turned in.  This is the end of first quarter and grades will be going home after the break.

Have a wonderful break!

September 30

Our class completed their unit one tests last week.  This week as we start unit two our routine will be similar to unit one.  There will be vocabulary assignments due on Tuesdays and spelling homework will be due on Thursdays.  There will be other assignments throughout the week, but these two will be pretty consistent.  Our vocabulary, spelling and comprehension tests will be on Fridays each week.  We take time every day to write in our planners, so your child should use them at home to make sure they know what is due in the upcoming days.

In writing the students are working on their descriptive essays.  We have done our pre-writing, written our thesis statements and our lead paragraphs.  I am hoping to be done with these by the end of next week.

Please remember our book reports will be due a week from tomorrow (October 8).

September 24

Today our class took day one of their first unit test.  It was long and tough, but the students persevered! There is one more story with comprehension questions and grammar tomorrow, so hopefully they will get a good nights rest!

I am hoping your child has been reading their personal reading books.  The plot sheets are available in class whenever they are done with their books.  Remember the book projects are due on October 8.

Our literature discussion groups on The Giver have been fantastic.  The students need to be prepared for each assignment, if they aren’t, they cannot participate in groups.  We always put the date of when the next discussion is on the front of the pink packet.

Thanks for all your support!

Hello!

Today the students finished up Unit 1 Week 5 in Wonders.  Next week we will be taking the Unit 6 test.  The test will be over grammar, vocabulary and comprehension from the last 5 weeks.  Please help your child study the grammar and vocabulary words at home.

I also gave the students the directions for their book report projects that will be due October 8.  We discussed figuring out how many pages they need to read each night in order to finish several days ahead of the due date so they had time to do a good job on the project.  We also went over how to fill out a plot chart to help them write a summary.  This will be a very helpful tool to organize their summary and include the major events.  Here are the directions for the project:

First Quarter Book Report Project, due Wednesday, October 8.

General Fiction-any type of fiction book you would like to read. Fiction stories use characters, settings, and plots to convey events that are not real.

 Assigned Activity:

1) Write a summary of the story. Be sure to include all of the elements of fiction.

2) Think about the theme of the book you just read. Imagine that you are going to interview one of the characters in this book about the message, lesson, or main idea that the author is trying to get across to the reader. Write five questions that you would ask this character regarding the book’s theme. Include the response the character would make to each question.

Thank you so much for your continued support!

September 16-book report information

Hello!

The students have chosen a fiction book to read for the quarter.  The only requirements are that they have not read the book before and that the book is not a movie or TV show.  As of today, the students have not received the requirements for the project yet, but I will post them on here as soon as they do.  The project will be due the 8th of October.  A good goal would be to finish the book by October 3 so your child could work on the project over the weekend.

I have asked the students to study their vocabulary words from the past 4 weeks each night.  They will have a test writing meaningful sentences over 10 of the 40 words next week.  They could also study their grammar packets as we will be tested over grammar as well as the comprehension and vocabulary for unit 1 next week.

I have Synergy updated right now, please check to make sure your child has all of their work turned in.  They are aware of their missing work as I gave them missing work slips today.

Thanks for all your support!
