Book Review: ‘The Wizard of Dark Street’ by Shawn Thomas Odyssey

The Wizard of Dark Street. Told from a girl’s point of view, this book is filled with magic and wonder.

Meet Oona. (Not a spelling error) A twelve year old girl who lives on Dark Street, a magical street in 1877 New York. Join her as she attempts to solve the random cases of Dark Street that the idiot Inspector White can’t solve himself. She lives in the Pendulum House, with her uncle, the Wizard of Dark Street, a faerie named Samuligan, and a talking raven named Deacon. Dark Street is a street, spinning in the ‘Drift’, connecting Faerie to the world of Man. At midnight exactly, great iron gates at the north end of the street open onto the human world for a minute. Then, they close again, and the street goes spinning off again. Pretty magical place, huh?

After her uncle gets stabbed with a magical dagger, Oona must try to figure out who was the attacker. If she doesn’t, a criminal by the name of Red Martin may destroy the Pendulum House, and send the whole of Dark Street spinning off into the Drift.

I think this book is amazing, because it is filled with magic and suspense. I know it sounds formal and dumb and cliche, but it really does hold you until the very end. My advice? Grab some food, settle down in a comfy place, and be prepared to sit there for hours. This is one book you don’t want to miss.
