Book Review: ‘Speak’ by Laurie Halse Anderson

This book is amazing. I absolutely couldn’t put it down my first read through. This book glues your eyes to the page and refuses to let you go until you’re done. It’s spooky in a good way. Enter the mind of Melinda, a girl gnawed at by words left unsaid and feelings left unexpressed. She is a high school freshman, beginning the school year with her old friends glaring at her and most people bullying her. As the school year drags on, she sinks further and further into depression. As Laurie puts it in the book: “I stumble from thornbush to thornbush–my mother and father who hate each other, Rachel [her old best friend] who hates me, a school that gags on me like I’m a hairball.” Follow her journey in this amazing novel. Maybe you’ll learn something yourself
