Now is the time to start saving and planning for sending your 8th grader on a study/tour of Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia with Irving Middle School teachers and the Close Up Foundation. Close Up’s Capital Experience program offers your student a unique combination of education and fun, bringing together the cultural and historical resources of Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia creating an unforgettable learning experience. Developed by teachers, the program complements LPS Social Studies content and standards. Capital Experience provides an intimate look at monuments and landmarks and a firsthand view of history in the making – challenging students beyond the confines of the classroom. Next year’s Washington, D.C. option is scheduled to leave on Sunday March 25th and return on Friday evening of March 30th. The cost will be $1,943. There is a $400 down payment due by October 20th and the grand total is due by February 8th. This includes round-trip airfare from Lincoln or Omaha, five nights lodging, most meals, ground transportation, Close Up teaching staff, security, and insurance.

This is a GREAT opportunity for students to experience our nation’s capital with th-2classmates and students from around the country. This is a trip that students and parents have asked me to do for years. It is an Irving tradition. The kids came back this year with such a greater understanding of so many things and made special connections with friends. I can’t recommend this trip enough. We will be doing an “early arrival” where we will make stops at the Holocaust Museum, Ford’s Theatre, the National Zoo and the Newseum. If you have any questions about the program, please do not hesitate to ask. My email is dbayne@lps.org. You can also visit the close up website at closeup.org.

We have a twitter page for the trip as well. You can go back and follow what we did on that page.
