Close Up, 2018

Now is the time to start saving and planning for sending your 8th grader on a study/tour of
Washington, D.C., Gettysburg, and New York City with Scott Middle School teachers and the
Close Up Foundation. Close Up’s Capital Experience program offers your student a unique
combination of education and fun, bringing together the cultural and historical resources of
Washington, D.C. and New York City creating an unforgettable learning experience. Developed
by teachers, the program complements LPS Social Studies content and standards. Capital
Experience provides an intimate look at monuments and landmarks and a firsthand view of
history in the making – challenging students beyond the confines of the classroom.
Next year’s Washington, D.C. option is scheduled to leave Saturday, April 14 and last through
Thursday, April 19. We will spend five nights/six days in Washington, D.C., which includes a
day trip to Gettysburg. The all-inclusive cost next year (with the exception of spending money
and a couple meals) is about $1900.This includes round-trip airfare from Lincoln or Omaha,
five nights lodging, meals, ground transportation, Close Up teaching staff, security, and
insurance.

After experiencing all that Washington, D.C. has to offer, students have the opportunity to
extend their study visit to New York City where they will spend an additional three days/two
nights. Students taking advantage of the Washington, D.C./New York City option next year are
scheduled to return to Lincoln on Saturday, April 21. This option includes unforgettable study visits to
historical sites such as Times Square, the Brooklyn Bridge, Central Park, Ground Zero, Wall
Street, Liberty and Ellis Islands, and a night on Broadway. The all-inclusive cost for the
Washington, D.C./New York City option next year is about $2600 (with the exception of
spending money and a couple meals).

This is a GREAT opportunity for students to experience our nation’s capital with classmates
and students from around the country. Past participants – this will be the nineteenth group of
Scott 8th graders to visit Washington, D.C.! – are nearly unanimous in saying they wouldn’t
hesitate to go again! We hope that your student will be able to join us next year. Please contact
Mrs. Cooper, Mr. Ells, or Mrs. Hohenfeldt-Spethman for more information or visit
the Close Up Foundation web site at http://closeup.org.
