8th grade Service Learning Project

Service LearningDid you hear? The 8th graders are engaged in a service learning project. The 8th graders are writing and illustrating their very own children’s book. When the project started some 8th were not very intrigued. The project was for elementary kids to learn social skills.

The idea’s differ through out the students. Some of the books are about hygiene, some about super heroes, others are about safety. I was looking around at some books and the looked very cool.

All of the 8th graders are working on this but Mr. Miller’s first period class has the privilege to go over to Huntington Elementary and read their stories to first graders. I interview Jacy Chittenden and asked her how she felt the first graders would react to the books. She said “I think that they will be excited to see older kids and for them to be read to.”

I also got some information that the students at Huntington will look up to us for coming. I also think that some of the 8th grade alums are pretty psyched to see their old teachers.

Mackenzy Ehlers is 14 year old 8th grader at Dawes Middle School and is currently getting ready for transition for 9th grade at East High School. Mackenzy is extra excited to be enrolled at East because she was notified earlier after trying out for cheer that she made the team.

While interviewing Mackenzy I asked her a few questions like: how she would describe herself in one word. She answered with “Smiley.”. So i proceeded to ask what makes her smile. “Friends, Family, The things that I do with them.”

I also asked her to picture herself in 5 years she stated ” I would be out of high school so probably in college…” College seems like a great choice and I believe that Mackenzy can succeed in anything she can put her mind to.

Block Schedules

Through out NeSA testing the Dawes Middle Schoolers have been experiencing new things. The Middle Schoolers have been going through the block schedules. The block schedules have been going on for about six days. The schedule have been great for some and not so great for others.

The Block Schedule consists of one and a half hour time periods. The block schedule for 7th and 8th graders looks like: 8:00-9:30, 9:15-11:05, 11:10-1:15, 1:20-2:58

Earlier I interviewed Mariah Dondlinger and she said “Block Scheduling makes the day longer, and sometimes the teachers get a bit annoying.” “It also gets really annoying when we have to eat lunch at a different time every day, It messes up my eating schedule.”

I know that all good things have a bad side according to Mariah some bad things are sitting with the same class and teachers for an hour and a half.
So NeSA is a benefit to students because it helps you get more work done and it helps you get a better understanding because there is more time to learn.

Holocaust Poetry Finalists

The Dawes Middle School eighth graders in Ms. Pappas’ English classes have been working on writing holocaust poetry by reflecting on what they have learned the past couple of weeks. After reading through a lot of great poems Pappas had to come to choose 10 poems to go into the Holocaust Commemoration Book. The following 10 students were chosen for the opportunity to be in the book.

Congratulations to Cecilia Chada, Sazoun Grayer, Thi Huynh, Zanea Nguyen, Alyssa Kolb, Morgan Strodtman, Brandon Fountain-Clark, Rachel Sams, Paige Miller, and Michaela Fransisco.

When Thi Huynh, one of the finalist was asked the question of how she felt when she found out she responded, “I felt very proud of my self, it made me very happy.”

The Dawes Staff is very proud of the finalist and hopes that they continue persuing their skill.
