Coming to Your Community

ServeNebraska Week of Service

April 22-28, 2013

Now is the time to join Nebraskans from Cass County to Banner, and everywhere in between in volunteering during this signature Week of Service!  ServeNebraska Week of Service is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging Nebraskans to seek out creative ways to serve their communities.  Volunteerism spans all ages.  Anyone can volunteer!  It’s about working together, to meet our community’s needs and accomplish our goals.  All Nebraskans are being called on to demonstrate the power of service in our state.  The week-long effort provides Nebraskans with the flexibility as to when they volunteer and for how long.  Our goal is to have participation in all 93 counties.

Join us, and our champions, Governor Dave Heineman and First Lady Sally Ganem to encourage colleagues, families, students, employees, groups and individuals of all ages and backgrounds to get involved and volunteer their time in giving back to their community.   To register your volunteer effort and learn more about the ServeNebraska Week of Service, visit www.serve.nebraska.gov.

Volunteers and School Security

As you know, Lincoln Public Schools requires volunteers to register with the district before being allowed to work in the schools.

For the rest of this school year, Randolph Elementary School and Irving Middle School will be piloting the online version of the volunteer registration system.

Check out the process to volunteer at Randolph:

go to the Randolph webpage http://wp.lps.org/randolph

look for Pages of Interest and click on the Volunteer Registration title

OR  along the top row, click on Parent Center, and choose Volunteer.

There are three levels or types of volunteers, based on what those volunteers do and their access to children.

Level I Volunteers:

Are people who volunteer occasionally and in a highly public setting with minimal direct student contact, and who is under supervision of LPS personnel.  Level 1 volunteers are NOT required to complete a volunteer application form and can call the school directly to set up volunteer times.

Level II Volunteers:

Are people who have direct student contact under the supervision of LPS staff.  (Room Parents, Classroom Helpers, Field Trip Assistants) Level II volunteers MUST complete a volunteer application form.

Level III Volunteers:

Are people who have extended contact with students on or off campus.  (Chaperoning overnight trips, sponsoring an after school club)  Level III volunteers are required to complete a volunteer application form and submit information for a background checkFor example, this level form will be required of all parents who accompany fourth graders to camp this year.

Questions?  Please contact Dr. B. or Mrs. Fasnacht at 402-436-1163 or Deb McKinney in the LPS Security Office at 402-436-1668.

LOVE and LOGIC MOMENT

There’s nothing more frustrating than students who just won’t listen and follow instructions! In every classroom, there seems to be at least one or two. To make matters worse, their selective hearing impairment seems contagious.

How do successful teachers…and parents…train kids to listen? Listed below are some suggestions:

Build special relationships with your most resistant students.

Great teachers know that tough students are far more likely to listen to teachers they love.

Set limits only for things over which you have total control.

Unsuccessful teachers and parents are famous for attempting to set limits on things they could never control in a million years. Successful teachers use Enforceable Statements to set limits.

Great teachers say things like, “I give full credit to papers handed in on time.” Less successful teachers say, “Hand your papers in on time.”

Enforce limits without repeated warnings and reminders.

Effective parents and teachers remember that kids will always come to need at least the same number of warnings and reminders they are given.

For additional ideas on building cooperative teacher-student relationships, applying Enforceable Statements in the classroom, and managing behavior as you teach, listen to our CD, Quick and Easy Classroom Interventions.

Thanks for reading! Our goal is to help as many families as possible. If this is a benefit, forward it to a friend.

Dr. Charles Fay
