There Goes March…

Congratulations to Hailie Fenton and Alex Lindgren whose art was selected to be part of the Youth Art Month exhibition at the State Capitol!

The Penny Drive to benefit the Lincoln Food Bank’s FOOD BACKPACK program raised $509.09!  Thank you everyone for contributing!  The BackPack program serves 50 Randolph families and has a waiting list for more.

CANS FOR BOOKS starts SUNDAY, April 1st!

• Get ready for the 12th annual Cans For Books! Plan on collecting your aluminum cans during the month of April for your media center, in honor of School Library Media Month. Since 2001, the program has donated over $31,342 to LPS elementary and middle school libraries for the purchase of library books.  Randolph has always done a great job of recycling and earning money for library books!  Let’s keep the tradition alive!

Participating in Cans4Books is easy!

• During the month of April, bring your aluminum cans to either A-Can Recycling or A & J Recycling.

• Mention ‘Cans4Books’ and donate your recycling refund to the school media center of your choice.

• Midland Recycling, Palmer & Sons Refuse, Shredding Solutions, and Barnes & Noble Bookstore (South Pointe) are our sponsors.

• The prizes: Schools with the top dollar earnings per capita will receive Barnes & Noble (South Pointe) gift certificates:

1st place – $400 from Midland Recycling

2nd place- $200 from Palmer & Sons Refuse

3rd place – $100 from Shredding Solutions

Bring in cans April 1 – 30 to:

South location: A-Can Recycling, 3255 S. 10th Street

North location: A & J Recycling, 3250 N. 20th Street

OR Randolph School’s collection area by the parking lot!

SPRING HAS SPRUNG and summer clothes are being worn to school:

Please remember that our dress code says NO flip flops, short shorts, spaghetti strap tops, or bare midriffs, and no socially unacceptable slogans on t-shirts.  Flip flops are dangerous on the marble steps and nearly impossible to run in gravel with.  Double check that your child is dressed appropriately for an active day at school.

One School, Many Stories

Friday, April 20 from 6-7:30 p.m.

1.  Mrs. Chaffee is asking each student to bring in a small piece of fabric, new or old, no bigger than 10X10 inches for the school quilt. Students that can’t bring a piece of fabric can select one from the donations that were brought in.
2.  The Multicultural Fair Committee would like to have a photo exhibit of Randolph families in the main hallway for the Multicultural Fair. Please send one family photo (i.e. photos of grandparents, siblings, parents) and don’t forget to attach the form that was sent home so that the photo can be returned to you after the fair.

The Mayor’s Run is May 5, 2012!

Families must register online at the following site:   www.lincolnrun.org

Mike Smith Assembly on Friday, March 23rd

Mike Smith spoke with our students in grades K-5 at Randolph School.  His message of using words for love and kindness to others, rather than hate and hurting, made sense to the children, who were an engaged audience, listening raptly to Mike’s stories.  Mike changed his stories and vocabulary to meet the needs of the students:  Kindergarten and First graders heard about “mean” things kids had said to Mike growing up, while fifth graders heard more details as well as examples of how Mike himself had been a bully and what helped him change.  Honest, direct, and entertaining, Mike Smith’s conversation with children about the importance of bystanders speaking up in a bullying situation had a positive impact on our students’ behavior.

LOVE and LOGIC MOMENT:

Are you new to Love and Logic? People who are, often ask us, “How should I get started?”

Many adults have early success finding limits they can back up – and setting them using fewer words.

For example, we can lecture our 2 year old for 10 minutes about throwing food – or we can take the food away. We can lecture our teen about leaving the car with no gas – or we can take the keys.

Words mean less. Actions mean more.

Instead of fighting with kids about homework or chores, some parents find enforceable statements such as, “I drive kids to _______ when chores and homework are done.”

When their kids start to argue, these parents don’t get hooked. Instead, without giving in, they calmly repeat a phrase such as, “I like you too much to argue.” Another favorite phrase is, “What did I say?”

In many new Love and Logic homes, it sounds like this:

Kid: “Mom, it’s time to take me to the mall.”

Mom: “I drive kids to the mall when chores and homework are done.”

Kid: “But we need to go now! My friends are already there.”

Mom: “I drive kids to the mall when chores and homework are done.”

Kid: “But that’s not fair!”

Mom: “What did I say?”

Kid: “You don’t understand! I’ll miss everything!”

Mom: “What did I say?”

Kid: “You’re trying to ruin my life!”

Mom: “What did I say?”

The ultimate key to success is taking it slow and experimenting with just one skill at a time.

Thanks for reading. Our goal is to help as many families as possible. If this is a benefit, forward it to a friend.                        Jedd Hafer
