End of the Week School Notes for January 6, 2012

BIST Consultant opportunities are back!  Dr. Scott’s grant request to the Woods Foundation was funded, and the money will put consultants into all BIST schools.

A BIST Consultant day will include a brief “final 15” minute plan session with each team, as well as an optional staff meeting after school from 4-5:00.

Our assigned days are:

Thursday, January 12—Linda Hosman—That’s THIS THURSDAY!
Friday, February 10—Marty Huitt
Tuesday, March 6—Deb Capra

Friday, April 20—Marty Huitt

Wednesday, May 9—Deb Capra

Linda and Debbie will both be coming from KC.  Linda is a really talented lady with some wonderful experiences.  She is an expert on serving children and young people with attachment issues and has, among other things, been a recovery room interventionist in the past.  Debbie is a retired principal.  She was the administrator at an alternative school in KC and before that served as a social worker and therapist. Her experiences are wonderful to draw upon. And you know Marty from all the summer BIST trainings.

The expense of the big rolls of paper ($75-$100 per roll) cause us to rethink our use of that paper, too.  Please use the rolled paper for bulletin board backing and posters/signs.  For covering shelves, wrapping boxes, or other uses, try newspaper or donated rolled paper.  Thank you.

December 15, 2011

Dear Randolph and Lefler Families,

Congestion at dismissal time is a long-standing difficulty at most schools.  Limiting and organizing the congestion as much as possible creates a safer and more secure environment at this important time of day.  Adding to the typical congestion at Randolph Elementary are several Lefler students without a clear purpose for being at Randolph.

Randolph has become an area of social gathering for the middle school students.  While the vast majority of the students are appropriate, any unsupervised situation can result in a problem.  Collaboration amongst both schools and Lefler parents is necessary to help reduce the congestion at Randolph.

Randolph and Lefler administrators are committed to helping create a better dismissal environment at Randolph.  Beginning January 9th, the start of second semester, a new policy with regard to middle school students will be implemented.   Only those students who have a documented need to meet and escort a younger sibling home will be allowed at Randolph.   These students are not to arrive at Randolph prior to 3:38 PM.  Please refer to the policy on the back of this letter for options for these students.  No other Lefler students may stop anywhere on the Randolph property.

The new policy is outlined on the back of this letter.  Please read the policy carefully and make special note that students who currently have permission to be at Randolph may not be eligible under the new guidelines.  Students who are eligible will need to obtain a new permission slip for second semester.

We appreciate your support as we work collaboratively to resolve this issue.  Feel free to contact either of us if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Dr. Wendy A. Bonaiuto                                                Kelly Schrad

Policy for Middle School Students at Randolph Elementary

  • Only those students who must pick up a younger sibling ANDwalk them home will be allowed to wait at Randolph.
    • Permission to wait at Randolph will require a signed form – a new form for 2nd semester will be required
    • Forms may be obtained from Dr. Bonaiuto at Randolph
    • Students with permission will not be allowed to arrive at Randolph until 3:38 PM
    • Friends will not be allowed to wait with students picking up siblings
    • Students with signed permission forms may wait at Lefler outside with the Star Tran students or may choose to work quietly in the media center until 3:25.
  • Randolph will no longer be a meeting or pick up area for older students whose parents want to pick up several children in one spot.  Lefler students should be picked up at Lefler.
  • Middle school students coming to Randolph with parents to pick up younger siblings are to wait in the car.
  • Middle school students are not allowed to wait or socialize on Randolph property.  Students not following appropriate procedures or school expectations will have their parent notified and are subject to disciplinary consequences at Lefler.
  • Lefler students walking by Randolph are expected to walk by the school without incident and will not be allowed to stop on any portion of the Randolph grounds.  This includes the lower playground area near 39th street.

Love and Logic Moment

It’s a Great Time to Donate Those Older Toys

The holidays are wrapping up, and chances are, your kids have a whole bunch of older toys they’re no longer interested in. By involving our kids in selecting and packing up the toys they’d like to donate, and taking the toys to a local church, synagogue, shelter, etc., we do good for the world and good for our kids. Get the process started in a brief and simple way:

You got some really nice things for Christmas this year, sweetie. How nice! Do you know there are a lot of kids who aren’t so lucky? Let’s pick some of your old toys and give them to kids who don’t have any.

Some children suddenly want to keep ALL their old toys when they hear this. Just reassure them that you won’t be taking the toys they love and play with the most…only the ones that gather dust.

It never hurts to add one more thing:

I have some things that I don’t use anymore, so I’m going to give them away, too.

Thanks for reading! Our goal is to help as many families as possible. If this is a benefit, forward it to a friend.

Dr. Charles Fay

THANK YOU, TEACHER

Thank your teacher today.  In honor of Nebraska Teacher Recognition Day – Tuesday, March 6 – Lincoln Public Schools and KFOR/KFRX Radio collaborate to thank our educators with the annual Thank You Teacher contest.

Children, teenagers and grownups can pay tribute to a teacher who has made a difference in their lives – by nominating that teacher for recognition from the Thank You Teacher contest. Five teachers will be chosen and honored at a breakfast on March 6 at the Governor’s Mansion, where the five students who submitted the winning nominations also will be invited to attend and read their winning letters. The winners will all receive gift bags and prizes awarded by KFOR/KFRX and their sponsors.

Anyone who lives in Lincoln/Lancaster County can nominate a teacher in any of five categories: preschool-grade 2, grades 3-5, middle school, high school and retired.  In addition to a written description, explaining why a teacher made a difference in your life, entries should include the teacher’s name, grade level and school (or contact information), as well as the nominator’s name, address and phone number.

Nominations should be postmarked or sent by Friday, Feb. 24, at 5 p.m. and mailed to: Thank You Teacher, Communications, LPS District Offices, 3801 S. 14th St.: Lincoln, NE 68502.   ** Entry forms can also be found on the LPS website and you can submit nominations online at: http://lps.org/go/recognize.

The event is part of Nebraska Teacher Recognition activities. Sponsors include Lincoln Public Schools, KFOR/KFRX, the Lincoln Education Association and the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools.
