The Guessing Jar

I will be introducing the guessing jar in January.  This activity will help us with number recognition, writing our numbers, number concept and estimating.  I have a jar that I will put a given amount of “something” in the jar.  We will start the guessing jar with numbers 1-10 and then increase each month from there.  I will start the jar by putting things that I find around my house that I no longer want.  Please wash or sanitize the items before placing them in the jar.  We will play the guessing jar game by putting it in the discovery center and students who want to participate will write the number they think is inside on a piece of paper with their name and put their paper in the guessing jar box.  On Fridays I will look at the numbers and the winner will count the items for the class and get to take the jar home.  Once the jar comes to your house you will keep the items that are inside and replace them with items from your home you no longer need.  Again, the first month of January your child may pick a number 1-10.  Examples of items are:

-paper clips

-cherios

-small toys

-candy

-stickers

-really anything that is safe and clean

The guessing jar needs to return by that following Monday so we can start over!  Let me know if you have any questions!
