1. Select books that interest your child.  2. Read to your child at least once per day a set time such as right before bed. 3. Model reading skills. 4. Invite your child to read the book to you such a simple book( Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See?).  5. As you read move your finger from left to right to help child learn that when reading we typically read left to right and have them practice with you.

***At school students have learned that we look at the book and read the book during large group reading time that focuses on learning letters.  Each child is given the above picture cues. My goal during Large Group Reading time is for students to read with me as I pause and keep their eyes on the book.  The books I selected for these target goals are called RebusScreen Shot 2014-04-25 at 11.42.32 AM Readers. They have a picture and a word so that students can decode the word. In order to help students understand that goal, students graded themselves by using that above picture cues (Student Self-Assessment).  Students learn to take ownership of how they are doing in reading. This helps them develop responsibility and interest in what they are learning.
