Science Experiments

Spring 2015

Kool-Aid, Rice, and Vinegar! How much fun! Place 3 cups white rice in container. Add 1-2 packets of Kool-Aid packets. Next, add vinegar. Just enough to get the rice wet. Stir all together. Watch as the rice begins to turn colors. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes or longer. Next, drain the rice and let is sit out on a paper towel to dry for several hours. Once dry, place in a container and add toys or items such as measuring cups for your child to play with! This is a great sensory activity!

This week I asked students to help me solve the problem of how to open a coconut. Students tried using plastic silverware, pretend tools, and blocks. They came up with ideas on their own. We wrapped the coconut in a towel and everyone got a turn with what they picked out to use.

After several tries we were able to open the coconut using blocks. Students were amazed at what they found inside.

Here are some follow up questions to as at home?

1. What was the outside of the coconut like?

2. What did we find inside?

3. What came out of the coconut when we cracked it?

This week I asked students what would happen if I put a white flowers into red water and blue water.

Here is what the class said:

The flowers’ petals will fall off.

The flowers are going to die.

The flowers will turn blue.

The flowers need to be planted back outside and then watered.

The next day students discovered that the flowers turned colors.

Here are their responses:

You must have put them in juice.

Wow! Look at that.

Let me see!

You have to have water for them to stay alive. If you cut down a tree it will die and so will the flower.

Teacher Questions: What happened to make the flowers turn colors? Do you think the flowers were thirsty? What would happen if they did not have water?  Would they still turn colors?

*******Here are some follow up questions to ask at home?

1. Why did the flowers turn red or blue?

2. Did your idea about what would happen come true?

3. How many flowers did we dye with food coloring?
