January 25, 2013

Happy Birthday to Jenna Perales on January 31!

From Dr. Bonaiuto:

Thank you for your kind thoughts and encouragement during my recent illness and absence from school.  I will return to Randolph for half days next week (Jan. 28-Feb. 1).  If you didn’t know I was gone, that’s the best evidence ever for how well our teachers and staff work to keep learning the focus for every child every day! Special thanks to retired LPS Principal Paul Canny for filling in on administrative duties.

Congratulations to Randolph Reading Recovery teacher Susan Johnson and
her Westie “Tucker”
who graduated from Domesti-pups last night. Tucker
now has been certified as an Edu-pup and will join Hank and Sophie as
reading and therapy dogs at Randolph. Welcome Tucker! (Woof)

From Human Resources, Dr. Kay Byers:

For any of your staff interested in transferring to a different school or position this year,  Dr. Linda Hix, Jessi Stilwagon, and I will be doing the transfer workshops on Monday, February 18 in the gym at Bryan-at-Hawthorne and on Thursday, February 28 in the cafeteria at Bryan-at-Hawthorne.   Both workshops are from 4 PM  until 5:30 PM.   Please announce this to your staff members so they may attend if they wish.   We will be discussing the process and timelines for transferring.  Jessi will show teachers how to use the on-line School Recruiter system to facilitate a transfer.   We will briefly talk about resumes, interviewing, and references and will answer questions that teachers may have about the transfer process.
LEA will be advertising these dates as well.

Love and Logic Moment:

The 16-year-old was expecting anger and confrontation when he came home more than an hour late for supper.

“It wasn’t my fault. We just got busy at Danny’s house and I forgot about the time and my cell phone died.” He was ready to offer more excuses, but his mother just nodded.

“That must have been frustrating. But we can talk more later when I’m feeling calmer and thinking more clearly,” his mother responded. “I’m just glad you are home and I can stop worrying about you.”

“Did you save me some dinner?”

“Oh, no. But you can make yourself a sandwich,” she offered.

In a few minutes her son came looking for her. “Did you guys have brownies?”

“Oh, yes.”

“Did you save me some?”

“Not really. We had some extra, but we thought Mrs. Peterson next-door might enjoy them, so we shared the brownies with her.”

“I really like your brownies,” he offered plaintively.

“I know,” his mother responded with sincerity.

At the Love and Logic Institute, we teach parents and teachers to connect with empathy before solving problems with our children, before imposing consequences for their behavior, or before getting into an argument with them. Pausing to connect with empathy takes the anger and resistance out of many situations, and helps us avoid the angry words which damage relationships.

Empathy is the ability to notice what other people feel. Empathy leads to the social skills and personal relationships which make our lives rich and beautiful, and it is something we can help our children learn. Bob Sornson’s newest book, Stand in My Shoes: Kids Learning About Empathy, teaches young children the value of noticing how other people feel. We’re hoping that many parents read it with their children.

Thanks for reading! Our goal is to help as many families as possible. If this is a benefit, forward it to a friend.

Bob Sornson

My Plate: Proteins

http://www.choosemyplate.gov/

Proteins are any food that comes from meat, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, processed soy products, nuts or seeds. My Plate recommends choosing a variety of protein throughout the week to increase the nutrient intake and health benefits.

What is a healthy portion?

  • 3 ounces of meat or poultry (looks like a deck of cards)
  • 3 ounces of fish  (looks like an iPod)
  • 1 tablespoon of peanut butter (looks like a gumball)
  • 1 egg
  • Goal-5 oz per day
