Layered Curriculum Work

Class work is structured off of ‘Layered Curriculum’.  This is a process that allows students choice (for different learning modals), independent pacing, and opportunity to re-learn concepts if needed.  The ‘Layers’ refer to the level of assignments we are using to learn.  As we continue through a section we go “deeper” in our understanding to eventually master it!  Layered Curriculum is set up so that most work will be completed in class.

An example of an ‘Agenda’ for our work is below:

1.1 Astronomy: Earth in Space (pp. 6 – 13)

What we will learn…
Text Ch.
Describe the predictable motion & positions of the earth to explain days, years, and seasons. Chapter 1
Section 1

Instructions: Complete one “layer” before going on to another layer. Some assignments are worth more points than others because they take more time to do. You must earn the required amount of points in a layer before moving to the next layer.

Check off: You will check off your ‘Layer C’ work with another student. Please check off in designated areas and use key only for checking off another students’ work. Misuse of the keys as part of our classroom will result in consequences for cheating.

Late work: Late work is accepted. It is worth a possible 80% of the total points for the assignment and is accepted up to the end of the quarter.  You must show this work to Mrs. Gergen.

LAYER C – Basic Understanding.   Must complete Layer C before going on to Layer B.  Choose three to complete (earn 30 points).

  1. 10 pts_____ Guided Reading Worksheets.
  1. 10 pts_____ Visual Vocabulary Table.

LAYER A – Synthesis/Evaluation Work.  (This counts as summative grade – like a quiz or a test)  Choose one to complete to earn 20 points.

  1. 20 pts_____ Mini Research. Choose one of the accomplishments in the timeline from pp. 8 & 9 and research the event. Write (minimum) three paragraphs on your findings.
