Grading Scale and Procedures

In Writing class, as with all middle school classes in Lincoln Public Schools, grades are divided into the categories of formative and summative work.

Formative work:

– Is meant to be a check of the student’s learning, and not a final measure.

-Is not averaged into the letter grade that is seen on the report card.

-Is indicated in the “Work Study Habits” section of the report card with a C-Commendable, S-Satisfactory, or N-Needs Improvement.

-Often includes practice types of work, like daily assignments, homework, quizzes, checks for understanding, etc.

-Directly affects the letter grade, in that successful practice will often produce successful summative work.

Summative work:

-Is meant to be a measure of a student’s final learning of a concept.

-Is used to determine the letter grade for report cards.

-Often includes things like tests, quizzes, projects, final pieces of writing, assessments of a student’s use of the writing process, etc.

Writing/English/Spelling Class Letter Grades:

The following is the “weighting” of the summative work completed in Writing/English class:

50% – Final Pieces of Writing & Writing Process Assessments

30% – English/Grammar and Writing Skills

20% – Spelling Tests

Grading Scale:

A       90 – 100
B+    85 – 89

B       80 – 84
C+    75 – 79
C       70 – 74
D+    65 – 69
D      60 – 64
F       0 – 59
