In Writing class, as with all middle school classes in Lincoln Public Schools, grades are divided into the categories of formative and summative work.
Formative work:
– Is meant to be a check of the student’s learning, and not a final measure.
-Is not averaged into the letter grade that is seen on the report card.
-Is indicated in the “Work Study Habits” section of the report card with a C-Commendable, S-Satisfactory, or N-Needs Improvement.
-Often includes practice types of work, like daily assignments, homework, quizzes, checks for understanding, etc.
-Directly affects the letter grade, in that successful practice will often produce successful summative work.
Summative work:
-Is meant to be a measure of a student’s final learning of a concept.
-Is used to determine the letter grade for report cards.
-Often includes things like tests, quizzes, projects, final pieces of writing, assessments of a student’s use of the writing process, etc.
