Valentine’s Day

We will be having our Valentine’s party on Friday February 14th from 3 to 3:30. If you would like to come, please make sure you are signed up as a volunteer. If you would like to send valentine’s to school, we have 24 students. It goes faster if they just have their names on the valentine and then can drop them into the bags. I have bags we will be decorating at school. If you have any questions, please call or email me.

Ms. Morris

We have a new practicum student from UNL in our room on Mondays and Wednesdays. Her name is Ms. Natalie Morris. She is on the swimming team at UNL and is from Kansas City. She started on Wednesday. She will be working the kids throughout the day, in small and large group settings as well as individually. This is a great learning experience for future teachers. Please let me know if you have any questions.

January 16th

I will be sending Wonders usernames and passwords home tonight in case you have misplaced the first ones. This is a great way to see what we are learning in second grade. The stories that we are reading each week are included. If you have any troubles with the user names and passwords, please let me know and I will send an email to our computing people.

On a technology note, if you come across any apps for the ipads that your child likes and that are educational, please let me know. I have one classroom ipad that we have been using this year.

This week is all about how the earth changes. We have read about earthquakes, volcanoes, glaciers and tsunamis.

We started cursive this week. We have learned the letters i and t so far. The students are all very excited about learning cursive and they are doing a nice job with it.

We also started our 3rd quarter writing genre this week as well. It is descriptive writing. With this unit, we will start “show and write”, your child will be allowed to bring one thing from home on Thursdays and Fridays to write about. This item needs to fit into their bag. Please remind them that they may not bring anything that breathes, rots or is of irreplaceable value.  Some ideas could be a favorite stuffed animal, a picture, a toy or any other object that is school appropriate and that the children can describe in detail.  In the past, the children have really enjoyed this activity and I look forward to show and share with your child.

Coin and Food Drive

Operation: Stuff the Barrel

Coin and Food Drive

On December 9th, the Backpack Committee and the Leadership Council will be teaming up to kick off an opportunity to give to the Backpack Program and the Lincoln Community Food Bank.

What can be a special time of year for many of our children can be a time of stress and uncertainty for many families. This is why the Backpack Program is so important to our Lincoln families. The Backpack Committee and the Leadership Council will be sponsoring a Coin AND Canned food drive to show the importance of giving. All the money raised will go to the Backpack Extra Mile Walk in April. All food collected will go to the Lincoln Bank for distribution.  We also have a Morley Family who is willing to donate $1.00 for every can collected-up to 5000 cans-to give to the Philippines Relief Fund. This money would help people in need after the Typhoon.

The Backpack Extra Mile program raises money in order to fill a backpack with food to give to a child of need every Friday during the school year. This program was launched in the 2004-2005 school year at Clinton Elementary where they provided 50 backpacks for their students. The district is entering its seventh year of the program and has integrated it into 27 Lincoln public schools, as well as Lincoln private schools, parochial school and 17 rural communities. Unfortunately, the need has only grown. Last year there were 15,167 students that qualified for free or reduced lunch; that’s 43% of the Lincoln Public Schools enrollment.

Starting December 9th, each classroom will have a “stocking stuffer” container into which students can put change. As a school, we are looking to raise $300 by December 19th. The class with the most change will receive a “Free Gym Pass” that allows them to come to the gym for an extra PE lesson of their choice. The grade level that raises the most change will receive a small refreshment after a PE lesson.

WHAT:      Stuff the barrels with Food and Coins

WHY:        To support the Backpack Program, the Food Bank and the Philippines Typhoon Relief Fund

WHEN:      December 9th– December 16th

GOAL:       $300 and 5,000 non- perishable food items

Thanks for you Support!
