Coin and Food Drive

Operation: Stuff the Barrel

Coin and Food Drive

On December 9th, the Backpack Committee and the Leadership Council will be teaming up to kick off an opportunity to give to the Backpack Program and the Lincoln Community Food Bank.

What can be a special time of year for many of our children can be a time of stress and uncertainty for many families. This is why the Backpack Program is so important to our Lincoln families. The Backpack Committee and the Leadership Council will be sponsoring a Coin AND Canned food drive to show the importance of giving. All the money raised will go to the Backpack Extra Mile Walk in April. All food collected will go to the Lincoln Bank for distribution.  We also have a Morley Family who is willing to donate $1.00 for every can collected-up to 5000 cans-to give to the Philippines Relief Fund. This money would help people in need after the Typhoon.

The Backpack Extra Mile program raises money in order to fill a backpack with food to give to a child of need every Friday during the school year. This program was launched in the 2004-2005 school year at Clinton Elementary where they provided 50 backpacks for their students. The district is entering its seventh year of the program and has integrated it into 27 Lincoln public schools, as well as Lincoln private schools, parochial school and 17 rural communities. Unfortunately, the need has only grown. Last year there were 15,167 students that qualified for free or reduced lunch; that’s 43% of the Lincoln Public Schools enrollment.

Starting December 9th, each classroom will have a “stocking stuffer” container into which students can put change. As a school, we are looking to raise $300 by December 19th. The class with the most change will receive a “Free Gym Pass” that allows them to come to the gym for an extra PE lesson of their choice. The grade level that raises the most change will receive a small refreshment after a PE lesson.
