Students will be reviewing music symbols by name and meaning in music. They will need to be able to name and recognize them in a piece of music. A QUIZ will assess their knowledge. They will be making a study sheet in the class prior to the quiz. The questions on the quiz are fill-in-the-blank, true/false, explain, and multiple choice.
Symbols to recognize and know how to use are:
Staff
Treble clef – Soprano and Alto
Bass Clef – Tenor, Baritone, and Bass
Key Signature – Flats and Sharps – located right after the clef signs
Time Signature – top number tells the number of beats in a measure
Common time – C
Bar Line – divides staff into measures
Measure – small section of the staff
Repeat sign – either go back to the beginning or to another repeat sign
Tie – curved line connecting only two notes that are the same pitch
Slur – curved line connecting two or more different pitched notes to be sung on one breath.
D. S. – Del Segno – go back to the SIGN
D. C. – Da Capo – go back to the beginning
Coda – a special ending
Fine – the END!
