Congratulations to Nicole and BJ Biles! Burke Rigby Biles looks up to his big brother Tyce so much, Burke decided to come 3 weeks early so the brothers could share a birthday.  Burke is healthy and happy!  Burke was born at 10:27 on October 20 and weighed 6 lb, 12 oz at 19 inches long.  Everything went well for both mommy and baby!

ATTENTION: Duplicate Mailings to Parents Living Separately

The new computer system, Synergy, does not have a way to sort report cards for duplicate mailings. Vicki went through the census forms to create a list of parents of students who need duplicate mailings because of separate households. If you know of a parent who wants their child’s report card via a duplicate mailing, please contact Vicki in the office at 402-436-1163!

WALK your bike through the intersection.

NEWS FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE:

Welcome!

Paula Luce is our new Health Technician at Randolph.  She comes to us with great experience and is a great addition to our staff

Headlice

Not exactly our favorite topic, but for sure an attention grabber.  Headlice is something we deal with in the health office each year.  Some years we see a little more than others.  That is the nature of the bug.  Please let us know if you find head lice on your child.  It is our best hope in helping to stop it’s spread.  We can also share with you what we know to be the most effective treatments.  Unfortunately the internet shares a lot of misinformation.  Let us know if we can be of assistance.  In the meantime remind your child to not share hat, jackets and hair items and whenever possible keep all of their hats and jackets inside of their backpacks.

Dental

The school dentist is coming to Randolph on Nov. 13th. Only students who have not been to a dentist in the last year are screened.  Beginning next week we will be sending home dental slips soon for students we do not yet have information on.  If your child brings home a slip you can fill out the information and return it to the health office.  You can also email our Health Technician at pluce@lps.org with the information.  Thank you.

CLASS PICTURES

There seems to be some confusion about class pictures and composite pictures and individual student photos. I’ll try to clarify:

Professional photographs of individual students were taken by Life Touch in September and re-taken (for absent students or poor results) this week.

These individual student photos were available for purchase by families at the time of ordering.

These individual photos will be in the yearbook.

These individual photos of each child will be put in rows on photo cards by each class along with the individual photo of the teacher.

These cards with the photos in rows are the class pictures for this school year. These are called composite photos.

Each class photo costs $4. Class photos can be ordered until March 15, 2015.

THERE WILL BE NO GROUP PICTURES TAKEN IN THE SPRING.

Call the office for more information on how to order a class photo.

Love and Logic Moment

Love & Logic and Austism

by Dr. Charles Fay

I’m often asked if Love and Logic applies to children with autism. For years, we’ve been hearing success stories from parents and professionals indicating the answer to this question:

Yes. While it doesn’t solve all of the child’s problems, Love and Logic really helps.

I’d like to share a relevant and much unexpected experience I had bicycling home from work one day. While I was peddling down a peaceful pedestrian-only path, a woman in a minivan jumped the curb, screeched to a halt in front of me, and screamed, “I’ve lost my child! He’s autistic and he ran away from us at the pool! Have you seen him?”

Of course I agreed to help her look for the boy. As I did, she warned, “He’s 13; he’s really big, and you won’t be able to get him to come with you.”

About two miles down the path, there he was. Yes, he was very big, and very agitated! I decided to use one of my favorite Love and Logic techniques, The One-Sentence Intervention.

I said to him, “Look at that watch.” He suddenly stopped and raised his arm to show me his Batman timepiece. I countered with, “And I noticed that your shirt has a motorcycle on it.” He looked at his shirt. “And I heard you like to swim,” I continued. He stared at me with a combination smile and “what-planet-are-you-from?” look.

In our book, Teaching with Love and Logic, we teach that relationships are the key to reaching challenging kids. The One-Sentence Intervention involves noticing unique and special things about children.

After noticing these small things about the boy, I said, “Just follow me. I’ll take care of you.” To my amazement, he followed me all the way back to his mother.

This boy gave me a great gift. He reminded me that kids are human beings, not diagnoses. He also reminded me that each of them has the fundamental human need to feel noticed and valued.

Thanks for reading! Our goal is to help as many families as possible. If this is a benefit, forward it to a friend.
