GET met Aug. 26

Present:  Michelle, Connie, Nicole, Susan D., Bethany, Laura P., Josh, Kiran, Annette, Wendy B.  Susie was at a district meeting.

1.  Leadership

United Way Campaign in September

Wendy asked for input/ideas on the upcoming (September) United Way Campaign.  District officials are encouraging all schools to increase the percentage of staff who participate in the donations.  No one is asking for a specific amount of money, but are aiming for an increase in the number of staff who return their campaign envelopes with SOME donation.

Randolph Staff really get behind and advocate for the Food Back Pack Program, raising money for a very visible program that directly serves the needs of our Randolph students.  Many of the United Way Campaign organizations also serve the needs of children and families.

So, Dr. B. is looking for input from all teams on the level of involvement Randolph should put forth this year for United Way.  Should we:

-offer building level incentives for reaching a certain participation level?

(Dr. B. does your recess or lunchroom duty…)

-try for district level incentives?

(Member of Exec. Committee does your recess or lunchroom duty…)

-set up “coin wars” for teams to gather coins (paper money count as a negative)

-teams verbally encourage one another to return envelopes

(Everyone who returns their envelop gets a free “Keurig” cup…)

-other?

Please discuss with your team and write responses in team notes.

Thanks!

Discussion of the BIST Philosophy Survey:

1. I have understanding of teaching and protecting vs. punishment and forgiveness.

Successful.

Sometimes, it’s hard to stay cool and calm! Can’t let anger in, or punishment/forgiveness model takes over!

Because education has been about punishment for sooooo long…I think we’ll all need improvement in this until we can switch that mind set.

2. I am willing to continue to re-energize around the concept of protecting students when they work gets difficult.

Successful.

Again, we all need to HELP EACH OTHER re-energize around this concept. I can do it most times….but it’s especially easier when heads are put together to try new ideas.

3. I understand why kids who have been in the buddy room are able to attend everyday activities.

Successful.

4. I am able to communicate openly and honestly with each other when they are drawn toward punishment or enabling.

Needs continuing practice/improvement

It’s difficult to approach this one on one, but so worth doing!

I can do this with SOME people, but certainly not all. When folks are in the midst of a tough time, it’s harder for them to think “protection” vs. “punishment” and it’s harder to have open conversations. I think we’re working towards this.

5. I have a strong belief of how to help difficult students make life changes.

Needs continuing practice/improvement

I can see that we have made some real differences to some students. Do I always know HOW to do it? Not necessarily, but I keep trying!!

6. I have a complete understanding of the goals for life and can use the goals in their language with students.

Needs continuing practice/improvement

I am practicing getting the goals language into the behavior conversation with students.

MONTHLY BIST Question will come out the week before GET meetings.

2.  Schoolwide

•Middle school students are being appropriate after school.   Dr. B. gave thank yous to Lefler Middle School staff and Ralph Calafiorie for their proactive help in reminding middle school students to take another route home, walk on the south side of D Street, and come inside door 10 if picking up a sibling.

  • • Dismissal is getting better by yellow cones – looks organized – carry over from last year

•EAT wants to know if grades would like to have one field day for K-1-2 and another for 3-4-5 at the end of the school year, instead of duplicating EAT and grade level activities?  Respond to EAT, please.

•EAT will be changing the plan for Tuesday’s Day Zero activities.  Be aware of directions for indoor activity coming via email.

  • •Ribbon Cutting for walking track: Sept 3rd at 6:00 pm – PTA meeting at 6:30 pm.

Mayor Beutler and LPSDO Officials have been invited to attend. Connie suggested having the two students currently on crutches help with the ribbon cutting.

OCTOBER 8 and 9:

International Walk to School Day is Wed., Oct. 9th.

Randolph has been chosen as the focus school for IWTSD.  Several agencies (Safe Routes Nebraska, Dept. of Health, Teach a Kid to Fish, etc.) will be here on Tuesday, October 8 to conduct a Day Zero type of rotation during Expressive Arts, for all students to participate in activities to learn about safe walking and bike riding habits.  There will be assembly schedule on OCTOBER 9, and an assembly in the afternoon to end the day.

In a related activity, Rick Helweg of Safe Routes Nebraska, will be conducting a club for 4th and 5th graders in which the students will research and learn about safe walking and biking habits, write the copy for actual advertisements in Community News, etc.  AND write and produce a video that will be shown in several ways to highlight safe walking and riding to school.   The club, 4W, will meet on Thursdays from 3:45-4:30.  Questions?  Please let me know.

3.  Non-classroom

•Could the patio area be swept on Monday mornings and in some other days before students arrive as much trash blows in over the weekend.  Dr. B. will ask Stan to monitor and do.

•Annette gave some ideas for selective seating for second grade in the lunchroom.  Watch for email details from her.

•Connie expressed appreciation for the extended time for K-1-2 in the lunchroom.  Dr. B. said again that the classroom teachers doing the recess duty is what makes this plan work for students.  All agreed this year’s lunch/recess plan is more efficient and organized than what teachers made work last year!
