Happy Fall Break!

Randolph School News for October 12, 2012

Happy Birthday to John Scofield on October 16 and Susan Dougherty on October 18!

COUGH DROPS are NOT candy!  Some students have been bringing cough drops to school, eating as candy, and sharing with their friends.  Please check that your children are not bringing cough drops to school.

IF your child needs cough drops, please send them to the Health Office, in the original package.  You will need to complete the form to authorize the Health Office staff to dispense the cough drops to your child.

Randolph Enters the “Recycle-Bowl”

From October 15- Dec. 14th, the amount of recycling our school does will count toward our Recycle-Bowl score.   The school that recycles the most (internal—NOT stuff from home) material per capita wins $1000!  So, before you throw something away, think about its “recyclability” and put it in the correct container.

Love and Logic Moment:

Johnny had a need. Not many things in life sent him messages that said, “You’re important” or “There is something special about you.”

At school, Johnny felt the need to test and see if anybody found him to be important or special. He craved being noticed. As a result, he acted out a lot. He sought attention from fellow students and teachers in negative ways and gave adults fits.

Many of Johhny’s teachers showed frustration. But Mrs. DeJesus was different. She would wander up to Johnny when he wasn’t asking for attention, smile and notice something about him – that he liked basketball or that he was getting taller. She didn’t take a lot of time or embarrass him in front of the class. She just scooted by his desk, noticed something unique about him and quickly moved on.

In spite of himself, Johnny found that he was drawn to Mrs. D. He always wanted to share news with her or find ways to please her. A strange thing happened in Mrs. DeJesus’s class: the more she noticed Johnny, the less he messed around trying to be noticed. She met his need, but she did it on her terms.

Effective adults see unmet needs that are barriers to kids’ success. Then, they plan healthy ways to help those needs get met.

In my new webinar, Success with Severely Disruptive Youth, you’ll learn how to use proactive techniques like Mrs. DeJesus and laugh as you learn ways to meet needs and get through to even the toughest kids. I know it will help you be more effective.

STAFF:

Please find and turn in to Dr. B. a photo of yourself at your graduation— could be high school or college.  For American Education Week, we’ll have a bulletin board in the main hallway with all of our graduation photos.   It’s part of the LPS and Dr. Stavem’s focus in elementary schools on graduation.  Deadline for turning in photos is Nov. 1st.  Thanks!  wb
