Happy Birthday to Susie Mahoney on September 20!

Thank you to Jody Kellas and Mitch Sump, Randolph’s representatives to Dr. Stavem’s Community Curriculum Council, which meets throughout the school year.

Thanks to Lisa Mathews for volunteering to be Randolph’s parent representative on the Assessment and Evaluation Department’s Parent Council!

Choose Well; Live Well

by Joan Creger, RN

When trying to manage your weight

Remember this simple phrase

Move More, Eat Less

When you “move”, you burn calories.

Burning 3500 calories will cause you

to lose/not gain 1 pound.

MOVE MORE!

Walking, jogging or running an extra mile each day

will burn an additional 100 calories per day.

This will help you to lose/not gain 10 pounds per year.

100 calories/day x 350 days = 35,000 calories = 10 pounds

You Mean it is Okay to Rescue?
Weekly Tip from the Love and Logic® Experts

She was riddled with guilt as she told me about the “awful” deed she’d done.

Her son headed off to school, forgetting an important assignment on the kitchen counter. Knowing he needed it, she {gulp} drove a few blocks and delivered the paper.

She finished her tale of terror and awaited a merciless scolding. Instead, I asked a few questions:

  1. Is he basically a responsible kid?
“Oh, yes. He helps out with his younger siblings and does chores without complaining.”
  2. Was he grateful you did this for him?
“He thanked me over and over when he got home. He didn’t realize he’d left it there.”
  3. Does he expect things like this from you often?
“No, he really doesn’t. I don’t remind him or have to nag him nearly as much as some of my friends with their kids.”

Then, I dropped the bomb: Sounds like you did the right thing.

She replied, “But, I thought it was bad to rescue. Don’t you say kids need to learn from their mistakes?”

I encouraged, “It is true. However, we also want to recognize that being kind to our kids and treating them like we’d treat a good friend or neighbor is a great way for them to learn how to treat people.”

At the Love and Logic Institute, we learned long ago that we don’t want to take away the sound judgment and common sense of adults (we couldn’t really take those things away anyhow).

Just like this mom, many parents find relief as they discover that the Love and Logic police are not coming after them as they do their best to raise great kids. So give yourself a break. Feel free to use your best judgment and common sense. If it makes sense to rescue or cut a kid some slack, please do so. It’s okay as long as they are basically respectful, responsible, and thankful.

Thanks for your reading! Our goal is to help as many families as possible. If this is a benefit, forward it to a friend.

Dr. Charles Fay

Randolph Represented at Nebraska State Fair Education Contests!

Two of our current students were fine representatives of our school at the Nebraska State Fair Education Contests.  Keegan McChristian’s wonderful Science Fair project from last spring won an Honorable Mention ribbon in the  K- 2nd grade division of the Science Display Competition.  Adrian Vavala also won an Honorable Mention ribbon for her science display entry in the 3rd – 5th grade division and her poem about Crazy Horse was the champion entry in the 3rd – 5th grade poetry/essay competition.  Arian also spent the entire day on Sunday, August 26 doing the testing competitions in math, social studies, science, grammar, and spelling.   Keegan and Adrian are members of the Lincoln Academic Team group of LPS students that participates in the State Fair contests annually.  This group has over 100 student participants from 16 schools in the Lincoln and Omaha area.  Schools from our group won the championship in the Elementary School Total Score competition and 2nd place in both the middle and high school divisions.
