Math

Many parents ask how they can help their kids with daily homework assignments.  We understand that this is challenging since you were not there to hear the lesson and see the strategies we used in class.  We encourage you to view some of our math videos to see the kids using the strategies.

Here is a list of questions parents can ask to guide kids through homework assignments.

If the homework seems too hard:

Please ask your kids to attempt the problems.  They will not get in trouble for incorrect answers and their homework scores do not determine report card grades.  I prefer to see incorrect answers than correct answers that students did not solve on their own.  Incorrect answers let me know what needs to be retaught.

Do not feel it is your responsibility to take over or teach new strategies.  We will review in class.  After your child has attempted the problems, if you feel he or she is still in need of further assistance, please feel free to make a note on his or her worksheet.

If the homework seems too easy:

Don’t worry, the homework is not meant to be a challenge.  The purpose of the homework is practice to master a skill or strategy.  Enrichment activities are done in class to extend the learning and challenge students.  Our emphasis is not for students to be speedy, but instead to have a deep understanding of what they are doing and why they are doing it.  We encourage students to explain their thinking.
