Interior Design Required Assignments

Digital Portfolio – due by last week, end of term 3.  Students will work on this project throughout the term by documenting their projects, field trip sites, job shadowing experience.

Job Shadow Experience/Interview – Students will observe someone who’s career is in the field of design, architecture or construction. They may use 3rd block class time to do this, provided they have arranged the date with Mrs. McCranie. This will be listed as an SA. The student may also do this assignment outside of the regular school day, but Mrs. McCranie will not dismiss students from a class time which is not 3rd block Interior Design. That arrangement will have to be provided by the parent/guardian as a PA.

The observation/job shadowing experience will be followed up with a summary sheet (typed) with questions and answers the student uses with the person they observe.

Several project boards, study guide questions, terms and other assignments will be completed during the term.

Assignment Listing:

Follow daily blog reports to view assignments and due dates.  This is a project based class with very few quizzes/tests.  Some design boards will be completed in a small group, but most will be on an individual basis with scheduled due dates for completion.

Final Board used as a possible selection for the HBAL Contest in February. – Term 1 only

Objectives   Class assignments:  Required Assignments and Class Expectations in Interior Design        What opportunities do you have as Interior Design students?  Begin group project – Coffee Shop, Bistro, Cafe Design

Wednesday –Obj.:  Connect with Professionals Within the Interior Design Career Areas.  Share with class required assignments:  Job Interview/or shadowing:  Interior Design Interview     Tote tray labeling. Continue Coffee Shop, Bistro, Cafe Design project with group.  PPT. on coffee shop ideas:  CoffeeShopPresentation2.  Window, door and architectural symbols paper handed out to groups for use on project.

Thursday – Obj.:  Connect with Professionals Within the Interior Design Career Areas.  Share announcements about Architecture College tour and Architect’s house tour, also requirements for the class with job shadowing/interview, final board and digital portfolio.  Continued work on coffee shop, bistro, cafe group design project.

Monday – 8/22 Obj.:  Identify and Apply the Elements of Design   Find examples of each Element from magazine photos.  Look for photos where the Element is strongly represented.  Cut out, label, photo for e-portfolio.  Obj.:  Develop Presentation Skills to Present a Design Plan.  Introduction of Elements of Design project board – Mrs. McCranie is the client:  Elements of Design Project

Tuesday –Obj.:  Develop Presentation Skills to Present a Design Plan.   Students are working on Dentist Office, Elements of Design Project in groups of 2 or individually.  They should ask their client often about the floor plan progression and sample selection.  Must be approved by client.

Wednesday – Continued work of project board.  Fire drill during this block.

Thursday – Obj.:  Apply the Effect of Color  Painting project – Intensity of color.  Paint one main hue then turn the hue into tints and shades going to 5 levels.  Marbling effect – painting on flooring tile. Watching Mega Mansions.

Friday – Obj.:  Apply the Effect of Color   HOUZZ – How to get more color.   Use the textbook on color schemes to understand the concept  pg. 358-363 and view information on career – Color Specialist.  Each student find an example of all color schemes, label and photo for portfolio.  Continued work on project board and individual presentations to client, Mrs. McCranie.  How the board will be presented to Mrs. McCranie – Designer to client.  Applied Assessment:  1.  How were all Elements used, 2.  Explain the intensity of color on the color samples, 3.  Are all 3 zones of space in use?, 4.  What is the range of feeling for the space used?  5.  How is line used for sense of direction?, 6. What effect do the lines provide?, 7. Describe the shape and structure of Form used., 8. How do the forms affect the feeling of the rooms?, 9. How does Texture affect color? , 10 How is the mood set with color?, 11. Explain Harmonious Design in this project.

Monday – 8/29   Chapter_7_Space_planning    Element Space project:  Find a magazine photo showing depth of a room:  1.  Explain the zones you can view in the photo, 2.  How is the Traffic Flow/Circulation Route, 3.  Identity Buffers, 4.  Open floor plan or not? , 5. Tuesday – PLC   Obj.:  Analyyze Trends of Interior Design relating to Homes with the Cause and Effects on Individuals, Families and Society. Continue Small House design board project, show examples of tree houses, she sheds, man caves, travel trailers from Pinterest with modular furniture/storage spaces

Wednesday – Obj. :  Identify and Apply the Elements and Principles of DesignIntroduced Principles of Design 2elements-of-design  and used Ch. 17 of Homes Today textbook to explain each principle.  Students will find samples of each principle, all 5 rhythms, 2 balance and 2 scale if human scale can be found.  Magazine photos, fabric, paint samples may be used for each principle.  Label, show Mrs. McCranie, take photo for your portfolio.

Thursday – Obj.:  Analyze Cultural Trends of Interior Design Continued work on Principle sample project, begin Multicultural project board multicultural-project-grading-rubric , students will find samples of fabric, wall paper, paint, flooring, etc. to color coordinate together without placing a direct connection to the use.  As they find a background wall paper print that appears to represent a culture they are seeing, they will coordinate from that background.  When all are mounted on a board, then each student will type a paragraph that explains their perception of the culture with the selections they have made on their board. Principles and Elements should be shown to Mrs. McCranie as you present this board, take photo for portfolio.

Friday –  Obj.:  Analyze Cultural Trends of Interior Design  Continued work on above projects. All small house design boards should be completed and presented by today’s deadline.
