The ABC’s of Kindergarten

A – If your child is absent, please notify the office at 436-1162. Art is Day 1 on the specials schedule.

B – Your child will be checking out books from the library every Wednesday.  Please return them the following Wednesday.  Birthdays are recognized during our morning opening.  Summer birthdays are recognized on their 1/2 birthday.  Do not send treats of any kind with your child.

C – Parent/Teacher conferences are held twice a year.  Communication is important!  Email is my primary form of communication with families.  Feel free to contact me if you have a question or concern.  You can reach me at school 436-1146 or by email sjander@lps.org.  Email is best.  Computer is Day 5 of the specials schedule.  Creative Expressions is Day 2 of the specials schedule.

D – Dismissal is at 2:53 every day except on PLC Days (the last Tuesday of the month)  On those days we will dismiss at 1:33.  Students will exit through door 2 except when the sidewalk is snow or ice packed.

E – My email address is sjander@lps.org.  I check it and try to reply to messages early in the morning, at plan time/specials and again in the evening.  Throughout the day I may check it but may not have to reply.  If I reply from my phone it will generally be brief.

F Friday Folders are sent home each week and should be returned the following Monday.  Information about field trips will be sent in the weekly email news.

G – Our class will have PE in the gym on Day 4 of the specials schedule.

H Hot lunch is served everyday.  Menus can be found on the LPS website.  Homework is sent home regularly with students.  All math homework is yellow and should be completed and returned to school.  

I Independence is the goal for all students.  It builds self-esteem and self-confidence.  Please help your child to learn how to tie shoes, button and zip pants, shirts and jackets.  Also prepare them for putting on their cold weather gear including gloves, hats, mittens, etc.

J – Please send a jacket on most days as the playground is in the shade in the morning.

K Keep updated by reading the class news and asking questions.

L – Kindergarten eats lunch at 11:00.  If you plan to join your student, please arrive promptly.  Notify the office if you plan to eat a hot lunch.  Literacy centers are used during the morning small group literacy time.  Student pairs work to complete various tasks throughout the week.

M– We have Music on Day 3 of the specials schedule.  The kindergarten math curriculum allows for all students to gain a strong, developmentally appropriate sense of number and place value.

N – I try to email a weekly newsletter.  However, there may be circumstances when a week is missed.  If you ever have any questions about its content please email me.

O – Remind your student to open their backpacks and empty their backpacks daily. 

P – I work hard to create a positive, caring classroom where every student is pushed to reach their potential.

Q – We will meet Q Bear this year.  He will help us learn how to solve problems and reminds us how we should treat others.

R Report cards are sent home in Friday Folders at the end of each quarter.  We go out to recess almost every dayPlease send appropriate clothing. The kindergarten reading curriculum includes the Alphafriends phonics curriculum, balanced with the reading of quality literature.

S School is important.  Please send your student ready to learn each an everyday.  This includes helping them to get 1i0-12 hours of sleep and a proper breakfast.  Science is Day 6 of the specials schedule.

T Talk with your student daily about what has happened in the classroom.  Tennis shoes are the best option for footwear.   

U Understand that each child isunique and each comes with different experiences and levels of expertise in a variety of areas.  Is my job to utilize these talents to help them learn and become the best they can be in the various areas of school.

V – If you would like to volunteer in the classroom, please let me know.  All volunteers need to keep student information confidential and will be required to complete a form.  Visitors are welcome, but a heads-up that you are coming is nice, too.  All visitors must check-in at the main office and wear a badge.

W Writers’ workshop is held nearly every day there is school.  Every student is an author and illustrator.

XExpect great things from your student and they will amaze you.  My expectations are high and I hold them to them.

YYou are your child’s first teacher and you know them best.  I love to hear about your students and how they are viewed through your eyes.

Z – The year will zoom by and my goal is by the end that every kid feels they are whiz at reading, writing and math!
