Purpose:

There are many reasons to study the Holocaust and genocide. Those that we will focus on this semester are:

1) To understand how a human catastrophe of such magnitude can happen

2) To understand the role of the individual in history

3) To recognize the danger signs of civilized society weakening and how to react

4) To develop citizenship and critical thinking skills

Topics:

This semester we will explore:

-Factors leading to and historical setting of the Holocaust

-Stages and events of the Holocaust

-Victims, Bystanders, Perpetrators, Collaborators, Rescuers and Resistance

-Legacy of the Holocaust

-Genocides since the Holocaust

-Individuals making a difference to prevent future genocides

Expectations:

We will be examining our own beliefs and ideas as we struggle to understand this complicated and emotional subject.  In order for our class to dig deeply into the topic and stretch ourselves, we must all follow a few guidelines.  As mature high school students I expect everyone to be able to meet these expectations. I welcome input from the class in adding other expectations that students feel are important.

1) Sensitivity to the Subject: We must respect those affected by the Holocaust by our words and actions in the class.  Jokes about the subject will not be tolerated and are very inappropriate in any setting.

2) Freedom of Expression: All members of our classroom community should feel free to express their ideas.  Listen and if you disagree, it should be done respectfully.  What is said in class, stays in class.

3) Maturity: We will deal with tough questions and be busy with lots of activities.  There isn’t time for immature behavior.

Grading:

Much of your grade for the class will be based on your participation in discussions and activities. We will have a few formal assessments in the form of tests, quizzes and projects during the semester.
