Music Curriculum Framework

Elementary School

General music is taught by certificated general music specialists in each elementary school.

Elementary choirs supplement the classroom instruction and meet once per week outside the school day.

Instrumental music instruction on band and orchestra instruments is begun in fourth or fifth grade in the form of pull-out lesson groups. Band and orchestra ensembles experiences are provided outside the school day.

Middle School

Mixed chorus and girls & boys choruses are among the ensembles available at the middle level. Groups meet daily during the regular class schedule. Seventh graders (with the exception of some instrumental music students) participate in a general music course as part of the fine arts exploratory block.

Instrumental students may elect to participate in band, orchestra or jazz band in most schools. Small ensembles are also available where time allows.

LPS sponsors several district-wide instrumental and vocal festivals throughout the school year.

High School

Choral music offerings at the high school level may include concert choir, mixed chorus, swing choir, girls chorus, boys chorus, show choir, madrigals and chamber singers.

Music theory and Distance Learning theory courses offer students a fundamental knowledge of harmony, ear training and composition.

Instrumental music offerings include marching band, symphonic band, concert band, orchestra and jazz band.

LPS sponsors several district-wide instrumental and vocal festivals throughout the school year.
