Chapter 1 + page 85
WEEK 1 Notes
Vocabulary week 1
- Earth science
- geology
- oceanography
- meteorology
- astronomy
- hydrosphere
- atmosphere
- geosphere
- biosphere
- core
- mantle
- crust
Part 1 Unit 1 Objectives
1.Name the four main branches of earth science & explain how they relate to other sciences.
- geology
- astronomy
- oceanography
- meteorology
2. Describe how the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere & biosphere interact on Earth
Because the Earth is system, changing on sphere will change another sphere. Example, a river (hydrosphere) and erode rocks (geosphere)
3. Investigate the use of geologic technology (GPS units, satellites) & how to interpret their results.
- Weather satellite Monitors atmospheric temperature and humidity, ground and surface seawater temperature, cloud cover, and water-ice boundaries. They can scan the surface of the Earth’s surface in one 24 hour period.
- VLBI Using a large network of antennas around the world, small changes in plate motion can be detected.
- GPS (Global positioning system) This technology combines satellites with computer technology to provide location information in three directions: longitude, latitude, and altitude to determine an exact location.
- Landsat Provides data on the Earth’s landmasses, coastal boundaries, and coral reefs. Total coverage of the Earth is achieved every 16 days.
- Navigation Satellite This type of technology is used to assist ships and submarines to determine their exact location at any time.

Week 1 Activity
** Be able to identify the core, mantle and crust on a diagram as well as compare to the “hard boiled egg” analogy.
Follow this link to answer the following questions:
1. Describe the two types of crust.
2. Why does continental crust “float” on oceanic crust?
3. How does the temperature of the mantle change as you move closer to the core?
4. What affect does this have on the behavior of rocks?
5. Of what materials is the Earth’s core composed?
6. Why is the source of heat in the Earth’s core?

WEEK 2 Notes
Part 2 Vocabulary
Respiration
Photosynthesis
System
Closed system in a closed system, ______________ may enter and leave but _________ remains.
Open system in an open system, both ____________ and __________ may enter and leave.
Renewable resource
Non-renewable resource
Unit 1 Part 2 Objectives:
1. Compare and contrast an open system to a closed system
- In an open system, matter and/or energy can enter or leave the system. Example, a river
- In a closed system, energy moves in and out of the system, but matter cannot enter or leave. Example, the cooling system of a car.
2. Illustrate the movement of carbon through the Earth’ s spheres.
Matter is neither created or destroyed. The carbon on Earth is converted from one form to another. Example, carbon, in the form of CO2, is exhaled via respiration and enters a plant by photosynthesis where it is converted into glucose (sugar).
Processes that remove carbon from the atmosphere:
- photosynthesis 6 CO2 + 6 H2O –> C6H12O6 + 6 O2
- dissolving into sea water
Processes that add carbon to the atmosphere
- respiration C6H12O6 + 6 O2 –> 6 CO2 + 6 H2O
- combustion
- decay

3. Explain how the Earth is a system of interacting subsystems (spheres)
A system is any size group of interacting parts that form a complex whole. The Earth’s spheres interact affecting the whole Earth.
.
4. Distinguish between renewable and non renewable resources
Renewable resources can be replenished over a relatively short time span. Example, wool, corn, sun
Nonrenewable resources are resources that take millions of years to form. Example, oil, coal, copper
