What’s happening in math quarter four:

This program focuses understanding on major mathematical ideas by picking targets, focal points and time to develop key understanding for the grade level. The five core concepts of developing a proficient mathematical first grader is: building concepts, having student leaders, doing math talk, community building everyday and doing quick practice activities.

Within quarter four your student will draw models to demonstrate understanding and develop language skills to verbalize procedures and explanations. Students will have homework and remembering activities to review important concepts. You will hear your child speak of ‘math talk’. This is a significant part of the collaboration we are encouraging in our classroom culture. Students will learn to describe methods of thinking by themselves and with classmates. Students will learn from their errors and become active participants to discussions centered around multiple approaches on how to solve a given problem. Students will work in student pairs, whole-class, thrive as student leaders and team build in small groups.

Concepts your student will learn in first grade are:

Number Sense

  • demonstrate place value understanding through 100
  • add and subtract two-digit numbers

Geometric/Measurement

  • measure using standard units, time, and money
  • compare shapes and solids

Algebraic

  • use objects and pictures as models to represent mathematical situations
  • use concrete, verbal, and visual representations to solve number sentences

Data Analysis and Probability

  • construct and compare graphs
  • make predictions

Things to practice with your first grader quarter three:

  1. halves and doubles
  2. Fourths, halves, and other fractions
  3. clocks and calendars
  4. 2-digit addition in real-life situations and in coin combinations
  5. measurement with nonstandard units and inches
  6. identify and represent numbers
  7. relate known and unknown quantities
  8. category problems
