Participants will take part in small groups divided by age. Register as an individual, or as a family… adults, teens and children (ages kindergarten and up) are welcome to attend.
***
Tuesdays | January 14 – March 24 | 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The Family Grief Support Group is for families with youth ages kindergarten through high school seniors who have experienced the death of someone significant in their lives. Youth process grief experiences through discussion, art and dramatic play in a peer group setting. Caregivers attend a separate group that runs congruently to learn how to support a grieving child, as well as process their own grief.
Kids’ Chance of Nebraska
Kids’ Chance of Nebraska is a non-profit organization that is proud to provide post-secondary and trade school scholarships to the children of Nebraska workers who have been severely or fatally injured in an employment related accident. The children of these workers often lose opportunities for secondary education and our aim is to raise funds for these children to pursue their education, reach their goals and fulfill their dreams for the future. Mourning Hope Grief Group
Has your student experienced a death or loss? If so, there is an opportunity for them to receive an extra layer of support at school.
No matter how recent the loss, we know that school is often more difficult for students who are grieving. LSW partners with Mourning Hope to offer a school-based grief support group for bereaved students. This 8-week, peer support group model was launched several years ago out of the need to reach teens where they spend the majority of their time—in their schools.
School bereavement groups offer a safe, natural environment for students to support one another. These groups help prevent negative consequences related to unresolved grief, such as difficulty with classroom concentration, behavioral problems, social isolation and withdrawal, depression, truancy, substance abuse, and even suicide. One of the greatest program benefits is youth recognizing they are not alone in their grief.
These school-based services occur weekly during school hours and are co-facilitated by our school social worker, Michael Barber, and a trained facilitator from Mourning Hope. Groups meet weekly on the same day for an hour, alternating between the first part of 1st, 2nd, and 4th blocks to reduce time out of classroom instruction as much as possible. All materials are supplied by Mourning Hope, and there is no cost for the school or the youth to participate.
Please contact your student’s school counselor or Michael Barber (mbarber@lps.org) if you have questions or would like to be notified when the next group is offered. You can also visit Mourning Hope at www.mourninghope.org to learn more about the many different supports they offer in the community.

The Power of Teamwork: Students, Families, Counselors
The Sophomore Family Meeting was held on Tuesday, October 1st at 6:30 pm in the Commons Area. Mr. Feeken, efeeken@lps.org, was the coordinator for this event. The agenda for this meeting included the following items:
- Graduation Requirements
- Pre-ACT Test
- Activities Resume
- Career Exploration
- Counselor & Student
- Roles& Communication
- Support Services
- Breakout Session: NCAA with Mr. Ernst
According to EducationQuest’s Exploring College booklet, the sophomore year is often a time where students begin thinking about the future, but not sure how to get started. One thing to keep in mind is that someone who earns a bachelor’s degree from a 4-year college will make nearly $25,000 more per year than their peers who only have a high school diploma.
Five steps that sophomores can take for getting started toward reaching their future goals are as follows:
- Ask for Help
- Create a 4-Coursework Plan (Available in student’s Counseling Google Classroom)
- Improve Study Skills
- Create an Activities Resume
- Learn How to Budget
By following these steps, students are more likely to achieve the following as part of their future plans (College Board: 5 Ways Ed Pays):
- Greater Wealth
- Job Security
- Better Health
- Closer Family
- Stronger Community
Counselors will meet individually with their assigned sophomores in January, which provides time to discuss the students’ short- and long-term future goals, 4-year plans and complete their 2020-21 course selections .
